President's Message

By Bill Putnam

Welcome to the winter edition of our Ropecord News. We are all wrapping up our year-end plans and preparing for the New Year of 2024 in our businesses and our personal lives. I hope the year 2023 has been healthy and happy and 2024 brings continued success.

As we plan for 2024, please remember to mark your calendars to include our Winter Virtual Technical Meeting on February 6-7, 2024. We switched to this virtual format by necessity in 2020 and 2021. We had strong participation and good success. With typical winter travel weather always a concern, we have decided to continue this as a virtual event for 2024.

We will all have a chance to network and get together again at our annual meeting on June 16-19 at the Sonesta Resort, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This is a biennial joint meeting with our Eurocord partners and is always an excellent event. Reservation details and the agenda will be coming out in the new year.

Our organization continues to be strong financially. We are starting our 2023/2024 fiscal year with good participation by members and our income and expenses are in line with budget expectations. This was our first year with a new online dues calculation system and we appreciate all the members that provided feedback and helped work through the new system.

Our mission includes being the relevant leader in standards development globally. We are seeing growing success in this area and awareness of CI and our technical standards are an area we should all be proud of. The work being done in this regard is often a slow and challenging job as we work through various committees and organizations that are involved in all things related to rope standards. Our Technical Director, Sarah Padilla, will report on current initiatives.

This is a good time to thank Pete Lance and his team for all the work they do on our behalf to keep the wheels turning. The 2022/2023 work wrapped up on the website upgrades and that allowed us time to set up a regular cadence of LinkedIn posting. Special thanks to the Communications Committee headed by Fran Hoffman and James Wolfington for creating a full schedule set up with a new release every week.

We appreciate all the members that were able to attend the Fall Technical and Board Meeting held on October 3-4, 2023. The Technical Committee had a very active schedule that will be reported later in the newsletter. As always, we thank member companies and attendees for allowing participation in these technical groups as it is the strength of our association. Many committees still need additional members and chairs, and we encourage your participation.

A big thank you to the Associate Members who sponsored this meeting:

  • Avient Protective Materials
  • FibrXL
  • Hailide America, Inc
  • Honeywell
  • I-Coats N.V.
  • Kuraray America, Inc.
  • Teijin Aramid
  • TP Industrial Yarns B.V

Comments or suggestions on any of the initiatives we are undertaking, or should be considering, are always welcome. You can send feedback to Pete Lance or any of the board members. Thank you for your continued support and participation.

I wish you all good health and happiness during this holiday season and into the New Year. Take an extra moment to appreciate your family, friends, and business associates.

Serving the industry for over 20 years, G&B Ropes has ensured high quality end products. G&B Ropes sources only first grade materials. Our raw materials undergo exhaustive and regular testing before being allowed into production. Our products receive exhaustive and thorough product development by our rope designers. After development, our lines are then tested on the water, in real world applications, before sending the line into production.

When designing a rope for our clients we listen to our customers. As we build our line we factor in how the line will be used. These factors include: line application, strength, weight, hand feel, and aesthetics. This combines to make a rope that not only performs as needed but also looks great.

Over the past few decades the rope industry has seen many changes. Raw material quality, design technology, and production methods have evolved light years. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: Our commitment to quality.

From dinghies to destroyers, G&B manufactures ropes of uncompromising quality for every application. G&B Ropes are a unique weave of modern engineering and time honored tradition. Our products are the result of years of experience in the lab, at the braiders, and perhaps more importantly, on the water.  At G&B Ropes we realize that the best rope in the world isn’t worth it if you can’t get your hands on it when you need it.

That’s why G&B is committed to not only producing ropes of uncompromising quality, but also to being your #1 rope source. That means high quality rope, on time, every time…when you need it.

John Flory Receives Energy Education Foundation (EEF) 2023 Technology Pioneers Award

Press Release

John Flory was awarded the Energy Education Foundation (EEF) 2023 Technology Pioneers Award at a ceremony in Houston on September 28. The EEF is associated with the Ocean Star Museum Hall of Fame in Galveston. It advocates and supports education about the energy industry.

Mr. Flory was recognized for Model Basin Testing of Offshore Structures because of his work in scale-model testing of single point mooring systems for tankers. He conducted these tests in the 1970s at the Netherlands Ship Model Basin (NSMB, now MARIN) when he worked for Exxon Research and Engineering. These tests were part of his work to develop the Single Anchor Leg Mooring (SALM), which is still used at the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) facility.

BRILEN New Development – GLI Series

Press Release

BRILEN TECH, S.A., European manufacturer leader in the production of high tenacity polyester yarn, after big investments on research, has developed a new series of yarn, GLI series, which increases tenacity in around 10% versus the standard, and well known by the industry, GLE yarn.

In those applications which a higher breaking force is required, or where the weight of the final product can limit the applications, the use of this yarn can mean a reduction of quantity of material and production time, keeping any other mechanical behavior.

This product has already been presented to most of BRILEN’s customers, with a very good acceptance, and is in industrial trials for homologation, and would also be available for offshore solutions.

Automate Your Twisting Process and Gain Increased Productivity with a Doffing Robot

Press Release

The AD400 is specifically engineered to automate the doffing process for tubeless bobbins on the Roblon Tornado 400 twister. This ensures a swift and efficient transition between production cycles, reducing downtime and increasing overall productivity.

The robot removes finished bobbins from the spindle and precisely places them on an external tray. After successfully doffing the finished bobbin, the AD400 will restart the Roblon Tornado 400, ensuring a continuous and uninterrupted production flow and thereby increased productivity.

When Should You Retire Your Rope?

Alison Osius, Outside

Back in 2002 or 2003, my friend Chris “Chez” Chesak won a rope. Psyched! At the time he was working for the American Alpine Club (AAC), but he left and moved from Golden, Colorado, to Boise to be near his eventual wife, Sally. As a member of Idaho Army National Guard, he was deployed to Iraq for a year in 2004. One child was born, and another, and that nice 10.2mm BlueWater Eliminator sat dormant all this time, and through four times moving house.
