CPC Grant Development Program

Jordan Matsudaira
Pauline Leung , Jordan Matsudaira , and Zhuan Pei , Assistant Professors of Policy Analysis and Management, were awarded a Russell Sage Foundation grant for their project, The Effects of Employment Incentives and Cash Transfers on Parent and Child Outcomes: Evidence from the Long Run Effects of Welfare Reform Experiments
(with Hilary Hoynes at the University of California, Berkeley).

Call for Proposals ---   Next Round of the GDP
 
CPC invites applications to the 2018-19 CPC GDP . The GDP supports the development and submission of grant proposals to population-related external funding agencies under the guidance and support of CPC affiliates and grant support staff. This award comes with $15,000 in project-related research support. Applications are due April 9.

Upcoming Seminars in the Innovations in Population Science Series 
 
Ann Morning (Associate Professor of Sociology at New York University) will present Far Back in the Family Tree: Mulitraciality across generations. Co-sponsored by the Institute for the Social Sciences (ISS) and the Center for the Study of Inequality (CSI). February 9.


Peter Bearman (Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Innovative Theories and Empirics and the Cole Professor of Social Science at Columbia University) will present The Neural Signatures of Social Life. Co-sponsored by ISS and CSI. March 9.
   



CPC Demography Training
 
Upcoming CPC graduate training proseminars this spring include: Developing a Workflow: Being Productive without Losing your Mind with Nicolas Ziebarth (Associate Professor of Policy Analysis and Management); and Innovations in Demographic Methods with Vida Maralani (Associate Professor of Sociology). A PAA practice workshop will be held on April 18 for students and other affiliates .

CPC is accepting applications for travel grants from students attending the upcoming PAA meetings in Denver April 26-28. Contact Meg Cole with questions .
 
CPC undergraduate training opportunities include a summer session in Turin and a semester (or two) of study at Stockholm University . Deadlines are approaching --- encourage your students to apply! 


Student Spotlight  
 
Erin McCauley, CPC Minor and Ph. D. Candidate in PAM, recently published a study in the American Journal of Public Health showing that people with disabi lities are over represented in jails and prisons ---   and the "disability penalty" is strongest for African-American men. This work was highlighted in the Cornell Chronicle. Congratulations, Erin!  
Postdoc News
Amelia Branigan , CPC Frank H.T. Rhodes Postdoctoral Fellow (2014-16) , is a social demographer with interests in inequality, health, and the criminal justice system. Branigan joined the Department of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago as a visiting assistant professor in the fall of 2016 and will be joining the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland as an assistant professor in the fall of 2018. Congratulations, Amelia!
 
Asad Asad joined CSI as a postdoctoral fellow in July 2017 after completing his Ph.D. in sociology from Harvard University. Asad presented an ethnography of how immigration judges make decisions concerning the removal of noncitizens from the U.S. at the joint CPC-CSI conference Criminalizing Immigrants: Border Controls, Enforcement, and Resistance on November 9-10 , 2017.
