*** National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, January 9, 2025 ***
We would like to pay honor and appreciation to our School Resource Officer, Deputy Carlos Flores. SRO Flores works hard to keep everyone safe at Corner Lake Middle School. Nobody needs to be reminded these days of the importance of school safety and SRO Flores takes school safety very seriously. He is continuously monitoring cameras, perimeter gates and doors, police activity in the neighboring communities, visitors to our campus, and more. We all feel safer knowing SRO Flores is at Corner Lake. When you see SRO Flores, please take a moment to thank him for all of his work at Corner Lake to keep us safe and secure!

Happy 2025 Eagle Nation!
I can hardly believe that we are twenty-five years into the millennium! It seems like just yesterday everyone was in full panic mode as we approached Y2K. Do you remember that? We thought the world, or at least life as we know it, was going to come to an end at midnight on January 1, 2020 because we were told that the world’s computers would not be able to process the shift from 1999 to 2000. Needless to say, great calamity and chaos never came to pass. The crisis never occurred. The sun still rose in the morning and the ocean’s tides came in and went out. Life continued to march forward.
There is much in the world that can cause us endless anxiety and worry. Most of the things that we worry about, lose sleep over, and allow to rob us of our daily joy never come to pass. I want our wonderful Eagles at Corner like to embrace the New Year with enthusiasm and excitement, not dwelling on things of the past or worrying about what might happen in the future. We strive every day to create an environment at Corner Lake where students can thrive by creating an environment where they are supported and nurtured academically, socially, and emotionally.
As we enter the New Year and the start of the second semester, I would encourage you to work with your student to set goals. Setting goals is an excellent way to transform one’s outlook on life. Andrew Carnegie said, “If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy and inspires your hopes.” We all need purpose and direction in our lives and setting goals is an excellent way to achieve this. Without goals, we wander aimlessly. When working with your student to set goals for the second semester consider using the SMART goal formula – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-Sensitive. We will work very hard alongside your student to help them achieve their goals for success!
I am very hopeful and optimistic for the New Year and I hope that you are too. Being a part of the Corner Lake Eagle community is something very special and powerful. We look out for one another and we support one another and this is why I am so happy for the opportunity to serve as the principal of this great school. Let’s make it a great year for our Eagles! They deserve nothing less.

Congratulations to Michael Waltz who was nominated by Ms. de Sousa as a Soaring Eagle. Ms. de Sousa writes this about Michael – Michael Waltz earned a 100% in Civics for the second quarter and 92% on PMA 2. He is a leader in Civics class and is consistently the first student in the class to start his work. He takes initiative and doesn’t need prompting. He also makes connections between what he is learning in Civics and current events in our country. Mikey has amazing class participation and doesn’t shy away from assignments that are deemed rigorous or lengthy, but rather rises to the challenge.
Congratulations to Isabella Margaitis who was nominated by Mr. Curtis as a Soaring Eagle. Mr. Curtis writes this about Isabella – Isabella is an excellent student. During the first two quarters she has excelled in her Algebra 1 Honors Math Class! I expect her to continue her academic success all the way through the 4th quarter. Isabella has excelled in the classroom, asking questions, answering questions, assisting her fellow students, completing her assignments and excelling on her CRM Tests. In December, She took the PMA2. I believe with her being on top of her assignments she almost got a perfect score (highest in the class) on the PMA2! I am very proud of Isabella. She works hard and is a joy to have in class!
Congratulations to Tyler Nguyen who was nominated by Mr. Curtis as a Soaring Eagle. Mr. Curtis writes this about Tyler – Tyler is an excellent student. During the first two quarters he has excelled in his Algebra 1 Honors Math Class! I expect him to continue his academic success all the way through the 4th quarter. Tyler is on top of all his assignments. He is the first one to the door and ready to get started learning what is next in ALGEBRA! He excels at his assignments, always completes them at 100% and excels at the CRM tests. He has been an Elite Eagle 4 CRMs in a row, Tops in the class. Tyler also came close to achieving a perfect score on the PMA2! Tyler is great to have in class and proud of his dedication to being his BEST!
Beau Ertel, King Tisdale, Michael Tinajero
Congratulations to Beau Ertel (left), King Tisdale (middle), and Michael Tinajero (right) who were nominated by Mrs. Kory as Soaring Eagles. Mrs. Kory writes this about these three students – All three nominations this week are boys and their nominations are due to their PMA scores in particular. Beau Ertel only missed one question so he had a 24/25 with a 96 percent. King Tisdale came in right on his tail missing only 2 with a 23/25 and a 92 percent. Michael Tinajero was the third highest scorer with a 22/25 and an 88 percent. All three boys are stellar students that make sure their work is done to the best of their ability, turned in and participate with curious and inquisitive questions. They work hard and it shows. Tests are hard work and preparation. They rise to the occasion and should be very proud of themselves. This go round these boys ruled the PMA – I challenge the girls to make the next one theirs!

The LATIN and GREEK ROOT WORD OF THE WEEK IS PORT. PORT means to carry or transfer. An example of a word utilizing the PORT root word is EXPORT which means sending something out of the country, like a food or item. What is another example of a PORT root word that you can come up with?
Make sure to return ALL overdue library books. Even if you have a book from ANOTHER OCPS school, you can return it to Corner Lake Middle. Mrs. Roberts will send it through the courier to the correct school. It is important to make sure all fines, missing book fees, and such are taken care of. Fine and fees must be settled WITH the school from which the fine or fee originated. Also, there are many fun activities and such in high school that require all fines and fees to be settled in order to participate.
There are TWO ways you can read books from your devices AT home, anytime. There are no losing books or fines, because they are automatically returned after two weeks! The three ways for e-books are SORA & DESTINY DISCOVER. There are literally THOUSANDS of reading options from these amazing online sources.
1) CHECK OUT E-BOOKS and AUDIOBOOKS on THE SORA APP on Launchpad or this web link: https://soraapp.com/library/ocps
