Corner Lake Middle School Community Brief
Friday, August 5, 2022
| |
Hello Mark,
In these pictures, you will see shiny floors, clean carpet, spotless desks, pressure-washed cement, neatly arranged bookshelves, freshly hung items on walls, and neatly arranged furniture. However, there is something missing. Can you figure out what is missing from these pictures? Of course, you can because you are smart. Students are missing! We have an empty cafeteria, an empty courtyard, an empty media center, and an empty classroom, but we are ready! In less than a week from today, these areas will be filled with students, Corner Lake Middle School students to be precise, and I can hardly wait!

Before students had even gone home for summer last year, we had begun making plans and preparations for the 2022-2023 school year. The planning and preparation has continued throughout the summer and now that teachers have returned, the preparations have greatly ramped up.
Last year was a great year for Corner Lake and this year will be even better. The teachers arrived on Tuesday with such enthusiasm and energy, ready to hit the ground running. I will say it again and it will not be the last time, Corner Lake Middle School is now a B school and that is something to be celebrated, but our goal is to be an A school. We will continue to pursue this relentlessly for the sake of our students, our Eagles. This is going to be a very good year at Corner Lake. We have several teachers who have joined our team. They are new to Corner Lake, but not new to teaching. They bring to Corner Lake experience and expertise and they are eager to meet your student! I am eager for you to meet them also.
There is a lot of important information contained in this issue that will be important for your student and the start of school so please read it carefully. Have a great weekend and we will see each of you very soon. Go Eagles!

Important Events
Many questions about the upcoming school year can be answered at Meet the Teacher Monday afternoon . . .
| |
Meet the Teacher:
We are so excited to welcome back our Eagles and meet our new students! Please join us from 4-5:30pm on Monday, August 8th. Students and families will be able to walk around campus, find their classrooms, and meet their teachers. Printed copies of student schedules will be available in the cafeteria, but you can shorten your wait by printing at home or pulling up the schedule on your phone.
| |
Laptop Distribution Update:
If your student has not yet picked up a laptop, we are providing an additional opportunity before and during Meet the Teacher on August 8th. Laptop pickup will be available from 3pm-5pm on that day in the media center. If you are not able to pick up a laptop during this time, students will be able to get them during the school day beginning on the 2nd day of school.
Beginning of the Year Q & A:
Question: My child needs a schedule change. How can they request one?
Answer: We are continuing to adjust schedules daily to ensure that every student has a full schedule with the correct classes based on their academic needs. Schedule changes can be requested using the form on the Corner Lake Student Body Canvas tile. Please do not have students email their school counselors with schedule requests. Changes must be requested through the form. Scheduling priority is based on academic needs and correct placement.
Question: Is there a school supply list?
Answer: Students should come with basic supplies (pencils, a notebook, a folder for paper handouts, a highlighter, wired headphones). Teachers will provide information about any additional supplies at Meet the Teacher.
| |
The annual state of Florida back to school sales tax holiday ends this Sunday, August 7th.
Question: Where do students get PE uniforms and locks?
Answer: PE teachers will provide this information to students during Meet the Teacher and the first week of school. PE uniforms and locks can be purchased through School Pay on LaunchPad.

Meals and the Corner Lake Café
This year the Corner Lake Café will be serving breakfast and lunch at no charge to all students! We will be selling many a la carte items that can be paid for with cash, check, or credit card through school pay. Any additional money will go directly into the student's account for future purchases. We will also be serving supper to any student on campus for any after school enrichment program such as Boys and Girls Club, Tutoring, Band & Chorus, Drama and Sports.
Any students requiring a special diet due to allergies/special needs please complete the "Special Diet Order" form. Once approved by our FNS Nutritionist we will be able to prepare meals. All special diet breakfast and lunch meals will be served on line #3 in the cafe during appropriate serving times. We will have a "Yellow Apron" at the area where the meals will be served.
Please go to the OCPS.net website to Food and Nutrition Services for information and forms. Please contact our cafe manager, SueAnne Williams at 407-568-0960 for any questions or concerns.

Strategies to Ease Back-to-School Anxiety
• Get back to a routine: return to a school-day sleep and wake routine, have breakfast in the morning, etc.
• Prepare school supplies, pack them up, and ensure your child has everything ready to go for the first day of school.
• Focus on the positive: ask questions like “what are you most excited for?” Or “what are 3 good things that happened at school today?”
• Join us for meet the teacher: students can meet their teachers, find their classes, and navigate the school.
• Normalize and validate your child’s feelings: let them know it’s ok to be nervous, scared, anxious, etc. about going back to school and many kids feel the same way. It will get easier!
