Corner Lake Middle School Community Brief

| |
This week is Assistant Principal Appreciation Week, and I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of our two incredible assistant principals, Dr. Katie Hyser and Mr. Adam Concannon.
In every school, assistant principals are the unsung heroes—working behind the scenes and on the front lines to make sure our students are safe, supported, and set up for success. I know that we all recognize that Dr. Hyser and Mr. Concannon do an incredible amount of work at Corner Lake, but I can assure you that whatever work you think they do, they both do so much more. At our school, we are incredibly fortunate to have two leaders who go above and beyond every single day.
Whether it’s supporting teachers in their professional growth, managing schedules and testing, being a calm and steady presence in a busy hallway, making sure facilities are clean and operational, or handling the challenges of student discipline with compassion and fairness, our assistant principals do it all—and they do it with heart. Their dedication to creating a positive school climate, their unwavering support for students and staff, and their tireless efforts to ensure our school runs smoothly are what make Dr. Hyser and Mr. Concannon such vital members of our team.
| Dr. Katie Hyser, Mr. Browning, Mr. Adam Concannon |
But perhaps most importantly, they lead with empathy, integrity, and a true passion for education. They are mentors, advocates, problem-solvers, and role models—not just for students, but for all of us. Their impact permeates through every building, every hall, every classroom, and every nook and cranny of this school.
So this week, I encourage everyone—students, staff, and families—to join me in saying thank you to Dr. Hyser and Mr. Concannon. Your leadership matters, your impact is felt, and your work does not go unnoticed. We are grateful every day to have you as part of our school family!

| | Here are the 2 multiple choice questions from this year's parent survey plus 1 question for parents where they can share any views on school improvement (English and Spanish versions): | |
Congratulations to Natasha Zamora Marcelino who was nominated by Mr. Judah as a Soaring Eagle. Mr. Judah writes this about Natasha – I'd like to nominate Natasha Zamora Marcelino. She has been on an absolute roll for the last several weeks, going back before Spring Break. She has shown a complete focus to make herself better by working slowly and methodically, asking clarifying questions, and making sure her assignments are completed to her best effort. While completing all of this, she has gained confidence and excitement in her learning and pride in her achievements. One thing that really makes her stand out is that not only is she helping herself, she is volunteering her own time to help others who are in need. She is doing amazing for herself and others.
Congratulations Natasha.

Congratulations to Allyssin Carter who was nominated by Mr. Judah as a Soaring Eagle. Mr. Judah writes this about Allyssin – I'd like to nominate Allyssin Carter. She came in late in the year but has integrated nicely into our class. Once she found her footing and comfortableness, she started excelling. She is constantly seeking improvement of herself by asking questions, making sure she understands (in her own words) how to complete problems and always expects more of herself. What sets her apart though is that she is also expecting more of her classmates. She has been helping others understand and complete their work because she wants to see them succeed as well.
Congratulations Allyssin.
| |
Congratulations to Michael Ortiz who was nominated by Ms. Iadarola as a Soaring Eagle. Ms. Iadarola writes this about Michael – Michael has blossomed in class over the last few months. He is focused, friendly, and always improving.
Congratulations Michael.

Understanding B.E.S.T. Writing Reports for Families:
On April 1, students in grades 4-10 were administered the B.E.S.T. Writing assessment. Results for these assessments are reported separately from the FAST English Language Arts (ELA) Reading and are expected to be available no later than June 30. School and district users will be able to access these results in the Florida Reporting System.
The B.E.S.T. Writing assessments are scored and reported on a 12-point rubric with the following domains: Purpose/Structure, Development, and Language. Each domain is worth four possible points. When results are reported, students will receive a raw score on the overall scale (12 points) and for each four-point domain.
Once available, as with other state assessments, families will be able to review student results through the Skyward Parent Portal. The list of resources below may be of benefit to families regarding this assessment and related reports.

Make sure to return ALL overdue library books. Even if you have a book from ANOTHER OCPS school, you can return it to Corner Lake Middle. Mrs. Roberts will send it through the courier to the correct school. It is important to make sure all fines, missing book fees, and such are taken care of. Fine and fees must be settled WITH the school from which the fine or fee originated. Also, there are many fun activities and such in high school that require all fines and fees to be settled in order to participate.
There are TWO ways you can read books from your devices AT home, anytime. There are no losing books or fines, because they are automatically returned after two weeks! The two ways for e-books are SORA & DESTINY DISCOVER. There are literally THOUSANDS of reading options from these amazing online sources.
1) CHECK OUT E-BOOKS and AUDIOBOOKS on THE SORA APP on Launchpad or this web link: https://soraapp.com/library/ocps
