Corner Lake Middle School Community Brief
Friday, August 19, 2022

Hello Mark,
Going against the stream is not easy. It takes hard work and determination to go against the flow. That is why so few people do it and why those who do strive to break away from the status quo of going with the flow really stand out from the crowd.
For the last month, my family has been watching a live webcam in Alaska that is fixed on a rushing river in the Alaskan wilderness. We have been watching the migration of salmon as the fish swim upstream to spawn. The waters of the river are flowing down stream with great force and ferocity. For the fish in the river, the easy thing to do would be to swim with the current, to head down stream and to let the current whisk them along with the flowing water. This would require no effort at all. However, if the salmon were to do this, it would ultimately lead to their destruction. Salmon need to swim upstream, going against the current, in order to make it to the calm headwaters where they lay their eggs. This annual migration ensures the survival of the species but it is not without great effort. Watching on the live webcam the salmon struggle, jump, and swim to make it to the next level of the river is really impressive and entertaining.
The easy thing in life for all of us is to go with the flow, even when the flow is flowing in a direction that is unhealthy or destructive. When someone breaks away from the flow, we take notice. For example, don’t we take notice when someone says “please” and “thank you?” I know that I certainly do. Why? Because unfortunately, please and thank you are not words that we normally hear anymore. Good manners and polite civility are not the social norms that they were not too long ago.
| |
At Corner Lake we want to change that. We want to dare to swim against the stream and to go against the societal flow when that flow is unhealthy or destructive. When society is disrespectful, we will be respectful. When others are rude, we will be civil. When the world is cruel, we will strive to be kind. I often tell our students, and staff, that we need to be kind and respectful to one another and treat others the way we wish to be treated. When we do this, we will turn heads and people will take notice, not for negative reasons, but for the positive impact, we are making on our community and beyond. We want to make a difference in the world!
Raising the bar of expectations and excellence is something we are going to talk about a lot this year at Corner Lake. Our students performed so well last year and we are so proud of their accomplishments, but we want to continue to raise the bar in order to reach our full potential. As any high jumper will tell you, you do not know how high you can jump until you raise the bar. Our students will never know just how excellent that they can be until we raise the bar of expectations. Together, let’s see how high our Eagles can soar this year by raising the bar of expectations and excellence. We can do it!

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!
