Just Around The Corner!

Corner Lake Middle School Community Brief

Friday, January 26, 2024

Hello Mark,

From the booklet Bits and Pieces comes an interesting story about Florence Chadwick, the first woman to swim the English Channel in both directions. On the Fourth of July in 1951, she attempted to swim from Catalina Island to the California coast. The challenge was not so much the distance, but the bone-chilling waters of the Pacific. To complicate matters, a dense fog lay over the entire area, making it impossible for her to see land. After about 15 hours in the water, and within a half mile of her goal, Chadwick gave up. Later she told a reporter, "Look, I'm not excusing myself. But if I could have seen land, I might have made it." Not long afterward she attempted the feat again.

Once more a misty veil obscured the coastline and she couldn't see the shore. But this time she made it because she kept reminding herself that land was there. With that confidence she bravely swam on and achieved her goal. In fact, she broke the men's record by 2 hours!

Being able to see the goal makes all the difference. Knowing where we are going motivates us to action and gives our actions purpose and value. Lately, we have been spending a great deal of time holding data chats with teachers and students. A data chat is when we carefully analyze student performance data. The data tells us where a student was, where the student is, and where the student needs to go. The data chats help everyone to clearly see the goal for each student. When students can clearly see the goals for learning gains and proficiency ahead of them, they are much more likely to press forward and not give up. Without clear goals in sight, we are left floundering aimlessly in the dark not knowing where we are going.

T.S. Eliot On Striving

"Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go."

 ~ T.S. Eliot, poet

Discussing data and goals is an ongoing conversation with our students as they continue to make progress and move forward toward their goals of learning gains and proficiency. I would like to ask you to please be a part of the conversation by regularly asking your student two questions. How many points do you need to make a learning gain and how many points do you need to be at proficiency? Your student should be able to tell you these goals for FAST ELA and FAST Math. Having an ongoing conversation with your student will help to keep the goals in sight and seeing is believing! Have a great weekend and go Eagles!

Soaring Eagles!

Congratulations to the following students who were nominated as Soaring Eagles by Mr. Curtis. Mr. Curtis writes this about these students – I want to congratulate theses Pre-Algebra students! They did an amazing job from the 1st quarter to the 2nd quarter and I am very proud of them. Their hard work and dedication to improve their grade is amazing. Their sacrifice and drive helped them score anywhere from 12 to 42 points from the 1st quarter report card to the 2nd quarter report card. Many of them became “A” students due to their drive to be a Soaring Eagle!!!

Congratulations to Kaiya Williams who was nominated by Mrs. Hatfield as a Soaring Eagle. Mrs. Hatfield writes this about Kaiya – Ms. Williams has been working very hard in reading class and raised her FAST score on the test in December. Congratulations Kaiya and keep up the good work!

Congratulations to Jesiel Delgado Cartagena who was nominated by Mrs. Hatfield as a Soaring Eagle. Mrs. Hatfield writes this about Jesiel – Jesiel took his time and tried his best on the FAST test in December and raised his score by one whole level. Keep up the good work Jesiel!

Congratulations to these three young men who were nominated by Mrs. Hatfield as Soaring Eagles.

James Lattimore (left)James has been working very hard and raised his FAST test score in December by a whole level. He has also been asking for help on other assignments and working hard to meet teacher expectations.

Yamil Marrero Gonzalez (middle)Yamil has increased his participation in class and is making significant progress towards his reading goals.

Nicholas Galindo (right)Nicholas increased his scale score on the last reading diagnostic and is motivated to do well in class. Congratulations Nicholas on making the Basketball team as well!!!

Congratulations to Kayla Letterio who was nominated by Mrs. Becker as a Soaring Eagle. Mrs. Becker writes this about Kayla – Kayla Letterio has the NEATEST math scratch work I think I’ve ever seen! She is a quiet giant - she sits in the back of the class quietly, takes effective notes, pays attention 100% of the time, completes all assignments to exceed mastery of content, makes perfect scores on her tests and is just a model student. I imagine she does not love the spotlight, because I didn’t even know she was in the school play, which took up a lot of her evenings, and she still never had a single missing assignment. She was great in the play too! Kayla is a perfect example of a well-rounded student striving for excellence!
