Corner Lake Middle School Community Brief
Friday, May 2, 2025
| |
When it comes to the last day of school, I have never been a day counter. I know that I am probably in the minority on this. You can ask most students and they can immediately report how many days are left in the school year. For the record, at the conclusion of today, there are 17 school days left in the 2024-2025 school year!
I often wonder how much differently we would live our lives if we knew exactly which day would be our last. Certainly if we had this knowledge and the number of days was few, we would live with a greater sense of urgency. I suspect that things that we consider very important now would seem less important and, conversely, things that we consider less of a priority now would be assigned greater priority.
Students have a tendency to “check-out” mentally as the days to summer become few. For seniors in high school, it is often referred to as senioritis. However, I would suggest to you that as summer draws closer this is the time for students to place greater importance on each day rather than less importance. I am constantly reminding students to embrace their school day with urgency.
| |
With 17 days remaining in the school year this is the time to really bear down, not to slow down. There are assignments to complete and end-of-the-year assessments to prepare for in these days that remain. Our students have worked so hard this year and my desire is for them to finish the year out strong. Please encourage your student to remain steadfast and diligent in their studies, making the most of each day. We are almost at the finish line and I want each student to receive the reward of success for their efforts throughout the school year.
Also, I would like to say in closing that our students did really well on the FAST PM3 ELA Reading test yesterday. I am so proud of them and shared the joy of so many students who came up to me excited to share their score. It doesn’t get any better than that. Next Tuesday is the FAST PM3 Math test, Algebra 1 EOC and Geometry EOC. Please encourage your student to do their absolute best and to BELIEVE. They've got this.
Have a great weekend!

She comes to school every morning with a smile and she is a pleasure to have in my 1st period class. She is a hard worker in class, she works well in group settings, and she usually has all of her assignments turned in on Canvas. I am proud to nominate her as a soaring eagle for this week! | | Tyson Williams, Casandra Bagu, Amelie Chambless, Alex Lapierre, Arriya Crawford, Elisha Zabel, Alyssa Mascarenhas, Daphne Carbone, Natalia Ramos | | Congratulations to (left to right) Tyson Williams, Casandra Bagu, Amelie Chambless, Alex Lapierre, Arriya Crawford, Elisha Zabel, Alyssa Mascarenhas, Daphne Carbone, and Natalia Ramos for being nominated by Mr. Curtis as Soaring Eagles. Mr. Curtis writes this about these students – As we are doing a review for the FAST Math test I want to recognize the following students for their outstanding work. These students not only STRIVE for the top bar to BE their best but they exceed it by pushing pass the minimum grade! As I watch the class work with their partners they stand out by being available to assist other students to understand the review! SOAR on Elite Eagles!!!! | | Congratulations to Mulham Abouradi who was nominated by Ms. Kassim and Ms. Hatfield as a Soaring Eagle. Ms. Kassim and Ms. Hatfield write this about Mulham – Mulham has been doing a great job in reading class lately. He is coming in with a positive attitude and ready to work. He has been asking for help when needed and has been making up missing assignments. Mulham, we are so happy with the new attitude and would like to see it continue. Keep up the good work!!! | | Congratulations to Kya Sounders who was nominated by Mrs. Roberts as a Soaring Eagle. Mrs. Roberts writes this about Kya – Kya loves reading, and she is always in the media center to read and check out new books. She was our team captain for Battle of the Books this year. Kya’s determination and leadership, combined with her kindness, made for a truly enjoyable Battle of the Books season. Kya is an amazing student and human being. Corner Lake parents, here are some great reading resources!
OCPS Student Dashboard -- See below for information on:
● SORA
● Follett Destiny
● Virtual Library Card
● Read 180
● Beanstack
| | SORA is an app that has over 2,200 books which students can download and read. It also includes audio books which are great for struggling readers. | | Virtual Library Card - This gives students access to the Orange County Public Library resources and books. It is also located in the Library Resources folder. | | READ 180 – Located in the OCPS student dashboard. | | This is the app the students use in reading class. The lessons are based on student need as determined by the reading diagnostic test they took at the beginning and middle of the year. All lessons target learning gaps, so any work or extra time spent on the program will help the student improve. | | Click on BOOKSHELF and then search for books. | |
WAY TO GO EAGLES! KEEP READING! We have circulated 7,022 books (print and e-books) so far this school year for an average of 9.44 books per student.

REMEMBER, IF YOU WANT TO ATTEND GRADVENTURE, YOU CAN HAVE NO TECH FINES, MEDIA CENTER FINES, and RETURN YOUR OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS!
| |
Make sure to return ALL overdue library books. Even if you have a book from ANOTHER OCPS school, you can return it to Corner Lake Middle. Mrs. Roberts will send it through the courier to the correct school. It is important to make sure all fines, missing book fees, and such are taken care of. Fine and fees must be settled WITH the school from which the fine or fee originated. Also, there are many fun activities and such in high school that require all fines and fees to be settled in order to participate.
There are TWO ways you can read books from your devices AT home, anytime. There are no losing books or fines, because they are automatically returned after two weeks! The two ways for e-books are SORA & DESTINY DISCOVER. There are literally THOUSANDS of reading options from these amazing online sources.
1) CHECK OUT E-BOOKS and AUDIOBOOKS on THE SORA APP on Launchpad or this web link: https://soraapp.com/library/ocps
