Just Around The Corner!

Corner Lake Middle School Community Brief

Friday, May 26, 2023

Hello Mark,

When planning curriculum and instruction for students, teachers often use the model of “plan with the end in mind” when preparing lessons and units. What this means is when planning for instruction begin by asking yourself what do students need to know and be able to do with that knowledge at the end of a lesson or unit. Then plan each segment of the lesson with that end in mind, taking the necessary steps to ensure that at the end of a lesson or unit, students can successfully achieve the desired end. This is the goal of every lesson that teachers present to their students.

This week I will attend two high school graduations. The first graduation ceremony for East River High School was Wednesday morning. The second, the graduation ceremony for University High School, I will attend this evening.

On Wednesday morning, East River High School graduated 440 seniors, many of which are former Corner Lake Middle School students. As I stood on the stage along with the other feeder school principals shaking each graduate’s hand, it served as a vivid reminder that this is the end that we need to keep in mind! Walking across the stage and receiving a high school diploma is the goal of K-12 education. Of course, many other goals lay on the other side of the stage, but many of those future goals are not possible unless we successfully get the students to high school graduation. The reason that elementary school and middle school principals are invited to high school graduations is because each stage of the student’s development is critical to their success. All elementary school and middle school teachers, staff, and administrators plan and work with that end in mind.

Waving to the East River seniors while being introduced on stage during their commencement ceremony on Wednesday morning. Good luck Class of 2023 Falcons!

East River seniors and their families at the start of the Class of 2023 graduation held at UCF on Wednesday.

Today marks the last day of the 2022-2023 school year. Our eighth grade students will be moving on to high school and our sixth and seventh grade students will return in August to continue on with their middle school years. In August, we will also welcome a whole new group of sixth grade students who will rise from elementary school. No matter what the grade, the goal is the same – to keep all students moving onward and upward. In middle school we work to prepare students for the rigor of high school as we continue to build upon the foundation laid in elementary school. Each stage is critical and interdependent in the student’s development and success. We all work together with the end in mind!

I hope that you and your family have a wonderful summer. Our students accomplished a lot this year and I am very proud of them. We are already busy planning for the 2023-2024 school year with the end in mind and that is to have an even more successful year next year! If your student is moving on to high school, I look forward to shaking his or her hand on the stage in four years. If your student is returning to Corner Lake next year, I look forward to shaking his or her hand in the courtyard in August. Thank you for your support and partnership this year. You are appreciated! Have a great summer!

Eagle Athletics

Athletes get a lot of credit for the dedication, strength, and sacrifice that they show, and they fully deserve that credit! However, they are not the only ones showing dedication, strength, and sacrifice. As you’re Athletic Director, I want to say “Thank you, thank you, thank you to those sports parents who are positive and see the values of life-lessons learned from playing sports.”

Your contribution to your child being involved in sports is invaluable. There would be no sports without your help and support, and it is appreciated by coaches, other parents, the team and, most of all, by your child. Through sports, YOU are providing your children with incredible life-lessons that will serve them well throughout the rest of their lives. Win or lose, they are building character directly because of your support and efforts.

Have a wonderful safe summer, and I can’t wait to see out student athletes next year!!!

~ Mr. Powell, Athletic Director

Soaring Eagles!

Alondra Gutierrez

Congratulations to Alondra Gutierrez who was nominated as a Soaring Eagle by Mrs. Gonzalez-Velasco (Mrs. M). Mrs. M writes this about Alondra – I nominate Alondra Gutierrez for her excellent work ethic and striving through tasks. Alondra has the desire to learn and pushes herself to success. She has been a great role model for others and enjoys learning. Way To Go Alondra!

Sophie Riley, Isabella Rodriguez, and Eva Rodriguez

Congratulations to Sophie Riley (left), Isabella Rodriguez (middle), and Eva Rodriguez (right) who were nominated as Soaring Eagles by Mrs. Hatfield. Mrs. Hatfield writes this about these three Soaring Eagles:

Sophie is quiet and attentive in class. She always follows the rules and sets a good example for others. Sophie is an amazing artist.

Isabella is very friendly and kind to others. She helps her fellow classmates when she can and always follows the rules. Isabella is also an artist and takes great pride in her work and gives attention to detail.

Eva is also an amazing artist. She is very creative and comes up with the best ideas. She is kind and thoughtful and always follows the rules.

All three of these girls have had an outstanding year in my class. They try their best, take pride in their work, and ask for help if they do not understand what to do. Sophie, Isabella, and Eva are model students for behavior and effort. I have been blessed to have them in class this year.

Ruby Roberts

Congratulations to Ruby Roberts who was nominated as a Soaring Eagle by Mr. Curtis. Mr. Curtis writes this about Ruby – Ruby has over a 100% final grade for the year. She is a really hard worker. Recently she went to Tallahassee to be a representative’s Aid. Not only did she work the entire week as an Aid she also kept up with her school assignments. When she came back she reminded me she had to complete a test from when she was out. Even with the week off from school she is maintaining an A for the year. I am glad to work with such a responsible student.

Gavin Meyer

Congratulations to Gavin Meyer for being nominated as a Soaring Eagle by Mr. Curtis. Mr. Curtis writes this about Gavin – Gavin has over a 100% final grade for the year. Gavin came into class not sure about being in the 7th grade Accelerated Math. As the year progressed he became one of my top students. He excelled at completing the assignments and that carried over to exceling on the common assessments from the county being one of the top performers. I am very proud how he became one of the best students in 7th grade accelerated math! Congrats Gavin on being a Soaring Eagle.

Nolan Maher

Congratulations to Nolan Maher for being nominated as a Soaring Eagle by Mr. Curtis. Mr. Curtis writes this about Nolan – Nolan has over a 100% final grade for the year. He is a positive student with a welcoming smile. Each day he comes into class with a positive greeting. It starts the class off on a positive note. After lunch crowds are always very active and loud and Nolan makes the transition a better process. I like the way Nolan assists his fellow peers with working out their math problems and seems to enjoy helping as many students as possible. He is definitely a positive Soaring Eagle!

Sanaa Itani

Congratulations to Sanaa Itani for being nominated as a Soaring Eagle by Mr. Curtis. Mr. Curtis writes this about Sanaa – Sanaa has over a 100% final grade for the year.
