Just Around The Corner!

Pink Out Day at Corner Lake Middle School as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Corner Lake Middle School Community Brief

Friday, October 25, 2024

Hello Mark,

Do you have a ‘Yes’ face or a ‘No” face? A story is told of a time when President Jefferson was leading a group of his companions on a trip across the country on horseback when they came to a river overflowing its banks due to heavy rains. The swollen river had washed the bridge away. Each rider was forced to cross the river on horseback, fighting for his life against the rapid currents. The very real possibility of death threatened each rider. A bystander standing on the river’s banks was watching the dangerous crossing procession. After several had plunged in and made it to the other side, the stranger asked President Jefferson if he would ferry him across the river. The president agreed without hesitation. The man climbed on, and shortly thereafter the two of them made it safely to the other side.

As the stranger slid off the back of the saddle onto dry ground, one in the group asked him why he had asked the president to take him across. The man was shocked, admitting he had no idea it was the president who had helped him. "All I know," he said, "Is that on some of your faces was written the answer 'No,' and on some of them was the answer 'Yes.' His was a 'Yes' face."

At Corner Lake Middle School we want ‘Yes’ faces on all of our teachers, staff, administrators, and of course, our students. In these uncertain times we need courage and confidence more than ever. We are striving to build a culture of confidence and hope where every stakeholder believes with resolute determination that YES every student will learn. YES every student will demonstrate growth. YES every student will be safe. YES every student will be supported. YES every student will be successful.

Optimism is defined as hopefulness and confidence about future successful outcomes. I am extremely optimistic for the future successful outcomes of Corner Lake Middle School and our students. As we partner together, please join me in working to help every Eagle cross the river to success. Let’s all have ‘Yes’ faces! Have a great day and a great weekend!

Make sure to return ALL overdue library books. Even if you have a book from ANOTHER OCPS school, you can return it to Corner Lake Middle. Mrs. Roberts will send it through the courier to the correct school. It is important to make sure all fines, missing book fees, and such are taken care of. Fine and fees must be settled WITH the school from which the fine or fee originated. Also, there are many fun activities and such in high school that require all fines and fees to be settled in order to participate.

There are TWO ways you can read books from your devices AT home, anytime. There are no losing books or fines, because they are automatically returned after two weeks! The TWO ways for e-books are SORA & DESTINY DISCOVER. There are literally THOUSANDS of reading options from these amazing online sources.

OCPS News: "Mondays with Maria"

Oct. 21, 2024

On this episode of Mondays with Maria presented by Addition Financial, Dr. Vazquez previews this year's Superintendent Town Hall Community Meetings and how they're different from last year.

Listen to the extended conversation on the new Mondays with Maria Podcast, wherever you get your podcasts.

Around the Lake...

Mr. Kermit the Frog visited the InD classroom, thanks to Mr. Cheyenne Hess (frontline/Kelly services), and read to our students. The interaction was incredibly positive, and the voiceover was "amazing!"

Also, this past week, students in Mrs. M’s room tested how gravity pulls objects. Each student had to build the tallest block they could until gravity caused it to fall. When engineers build skyscrapers, they must put supports in place to keep the building tall and in place. If not, gravity has enough force to bring it down. Students also learned that powerful forces can move objects even if gravity keeps them in place - through pushing or pulling. Gravity brings objects down, while forces can move them."

Pink Out Day was a huge success! Thank you to Mrs. Hurtado and her Builders Club for sponsoring this amazing event! Every year the staff and students wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Day!  (Please also see the picture at the very top of this edition!)

Luis Perez - 7th grade

Luis spent every morning for the last six weeks working on building this STEM engine in the media center, and he finally completed it! Our media center has makerspace projects suitable for everyone!

Mrs. Hatfield and Ms. Kassim’s students were rewarded board games in the media center because they earned an A or a B for the first quarter! Congratulations!

Mrs. Hurtado, Mr. Meneses, Ms. Jones, and Mrs. D’Amico attend a Collaborative Teaching and Planning Professional Development Training this week at Legacy Middle School. They love learning more to help improve student achievement at Corner Lake!

*** Best Selling Author's Visit to CLMS ***

This was an exceptional experience for our students (and for the adults too). It’s not every day you have 22-time New York Times best selling authors, Rachel Renee Russell and her daughter, illustrator Nikki Russell, come to your school, and the students welcomed them with enthusiasm! This amazing mother and daughter author/illustrator team stayed until every last book was signed, and every student got the photos they wanted. It was incredibly special!

Illustrator Nikki Russell drew these portraits for our Eagles!

Above and just below:

Students and staff in the media center to hear the author's presentation. Thank you again to Ms. Jessica Roberts, our amazing media center specialist, for all her planning and the work that went into making this a memorable event for our Eagles!

Our students created all of these welcome posters for Ms. Russell and her daughter.

Both Rachel Renee Russell and Nikki Russell made sure to visit with everyone during their visit at CLMS. They enjoyed their time on campus and we were fortunate to have them as our guests.

Mrs. Kory’s classes created their own biomes using many different ingredients!
