Just Around The Corner!

Corner Lake Middle School Community Brief

Friday, September 16, 2022

Hello Mark,

Community is defined as a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Most of us know from experience, community can be healthy and supportive, or conversely, community can be unhealthy and destructive. We all probably have experiences of being a part of both types of community. Being a part of healthy community is extremely satisfying while being a part of an unhealthy community is a dreadful experience. The former builds us up while the latter tears us down.

At Corner Lake Middle School, we strive to establish healthy community that will build up all its members. Unfortunately, we live a world where healthy community is becoming increasingly more difficult to find. We see divisions and discord in the world around us all the time, but at Corner Lake we strive to achieve the goal of healthy community where there is unity shared in a common purpose.

No matter what our background, we can all rally behind the community goal of helping every student succeed. We can embrace the shared community interest in supporting the hopes and aspirations of children. In addition, we can unify around the community attitude of unwavering commitment to children. When we do these things as the Corner Lake Community, we will stand firm, stand strong, and stand together.

Building up kids through the power of community is the developing culture of Corner Lake. When we stand together, there is no limit to what our students will achieve. If a tall tree stands alone in a field, a strong wind can easily snap the tree in two, but a group of tall trees planted closely together in a field can withstand the fiercest of winds because the trees can lean upon their neighboring trees for support. Let us unite and stay close together so that our students will continue to stand strong!

Yearbook

Hispanic Heritage Month began Thursday!

Every year, the Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. The histories, cultures and contributions of citizens with descent from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America are celebrated.

This celebration began in 1968 as the Hispanic Heritage Week under the leadership of President Lyndon Johnson, and was extended by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a period of 30 days, beginning on September 15 and ending on October 15. It became law on August 17, 1988.

September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of the independence of Latin American countries like Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on September 16 and 18, respectively. Additionally, Día de la Raza, which is October 12, is celebrated in this 30-day period.

As part of our celebration of Hispanic Heritage, our students have researched each of the Hispanic countries and learned about their culture and important people. In addition, the Latinos in Action class have been working on banners, flags, and artifacts to decorate our hallways.

Students and staff, please join us and celebrate your cultural heritage on Friday, October 14. Come to school dress up in your traditional clothes and share your culture with us.

Soaring Eagles!

Alenisse Torres Powers

Congratulations to Alenisse Torres Power who was nominated as a Soaring Eagle by Mr. Davidson. Mr. Davidson writes this about Alenisse – Ali is that student that all of the teachers want to have in class. She participates, encourages participation, openly discusses topics related to our class and she is another big reason that I love coming to work every day.

Brady Rosado

Congratulations to Jaiden Casiano who was nominated as a Soaring Eagle by Mr. Davidson. Mr. Davidson writes this about Jaiden – This young man is a very respectful student and bridges the barriers between several different levels and types of students. He is one student that makes me happy to come school.

Please help congratulate Mr. Gustafson for being our Golden Eagle of the Month! “Mr. G” is so creative with his students in Art class! We are lucky to have such an amazing teacher!

Latin and Greek Root Word(s) of the Week:

Root words are also useful for creating new words, especially in technology and medicine, where new innovations occur frequently. This week’s Latin and Greek ROOT WORD of the week is MORT which means DEATH. Examples of words using the MORT root word are MORTICIAN and MORTUARY. Which other MORT words do you know that also mean DEATH?
