Hello Mark,
WE DID IT – CORNER LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL IS A B!!!
I am so happy and proud to announce that we improved our school grade from a C to a B. This is the first time that the state of Florida has issued school grades since 2019 and it is the first time that Corner Lake Middle School has received a B since 2015. The increase in total school grade points represents significant improvement in student achievement and is certainly cause for celebration. All Corner Lake stakeholders share in this great success for everyone had a hand in helping to achieve this accomplishment. I am extremely appreciative for everyone who made this great milestone happen at Corner Lake Middle School. Thank you!
I hope that your family is having a wonderful summer. My family just returned from our annual summer vacation at Sanibel Island. Our time at Sanibel never fails to produce wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. One of the things that we always enjoy while vacationing at Sanibel is looking for shells. Sanibel is often referred to as the shelling capital of the world. Over the years, we have certainly found shells that would support this claim.
My youngest daughter has a real knack for finding prized shells. She never fails it seems to walk away with at least one or two trophy shells. I believe the reason why she is more successful than the rest of us in unearthing coveted shells from the sand is that she is very patient, thorough, diligent, and determined in her search for shells. Long after the rest of us have given up looking for that choice shell and moved onto another activity, Hannah is still at it scouring the beach for shells. Her efforts rarely fail for inevitably she will come running up with a beautiful shell resting securely in the palm of her hand. Perseverance and determination saves the day!

Sanibel Island and nearby Captiva Island have about 15 miles beaches and they cache more than 250 kinds of seashells from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean regions!
|
Corner Lake Middle School has earned our school grade of B (Florida Department of Education school grades - all Florida schools). Now we must continue on our present trajectory of improvement. In times like this, it is easy to become complacent and to rest in past successes. When we do this, we quickly fall behind and drift backwards. Finding the path to improvement from this point forward can be as difficult as trying to find a perfect Florida Fighting Conch or an unblemished set of Angel Wings in the sands of Sanibel, but we must be patient, thorough, diligent, and determined. We can and will do this because we have come too far forward to take one step backwards. Perseverance and determination will save the day. Our Corner Lake Eagles are worth it. They deserve it. There is an A in our future if we all continue to work together for the good and success of all students. We’ve got this! Have a great rest of your summer and “B” great!

Hello. I am Adam Concannon the new Assistant Principal here at Corner Lake. I am excited for this amazing opportunity. This will be my 10th year working for OCPS. I have worked at all three levels (Elementary, Middle and High School). I spent most of my years working at University High School (I’m a UHS alum) as a Dean, Behavior Specialist, Adaptive PE coach and a Program Assistant. This will be my 3rd year working in the Middle School setting. I was a Dean the past two years at Innovation Middle School in Lake Nona. I am thrilled to be back on the East side of town. I look forward to meeting and working with all of our students, staff and community members. Corner Lake is an amazing school where great things are happening. I look to help contribute to the continued success here at Corner Lake. It is going to be a great 2022-2023 school year.

Meet Amanda Burchins
Hi! I'm Amanda Burchins, the new 7th grade Civics teacher at CLMS! I was born and raised in Georgia, and I've only lived in Florida since 2021. I love all things Disney, and Stitch is my favorite character. I also love sports, especially college football (Go Dawgs!). As far as school goes, social studies was always my favorite subject growing up, so I am excited that I get to teach it now. I can't wait to see what this year has in store!

Meet Alycia Becker
My name is Alycia Becker. I am a 2010 mathematics graduate of THE University of Georgia, where I was a member of the Redcoat Marching Band for two years. I have a blended family with four children at home that I love to watch play sports on Saturdays, even if it means I have to watch Georgia football on my phone or tablet in the stands. This year will be my 13th year in the classroom, in which I will be teaching Pre-Algebra and Geometry. I am very excited for the upcoming school year at Corner Lake Middle, and I am always an email away if you ever need to contact me. Go Eagles!! (and, of course, Go Dawgs!!)

Chick-fil-A at Waterford Lakes Town Center
| |
|
The Chick-fil-A at Waterford Lakes Town Center has been a long standing partner to several OCPS schools in the eastern end of Orange County for many years now. What many people may not know is that Chick-fil-A was just ranked as the #1 fast food restaurant in the country for the 8th year in a row according the widely accepted American Customer Service Index published in large part by the University of Michigan.
Chick-fil-A was founded in 1967 by S. Truitt Cathy in Atlanta Georgia. Mr. Cathy grew up relatively poor Having grown up watching his mother struggle to run a boarding house in their home, Cathy hated the idea of carrying debt. He learned early on the importance of money management.
When he was growing up he was a C student and never attended college. However, he was always working. Cathy took on jobs — newspaper delivery boy, Coca-Cola stand operator — that instilled in him the importance of keeping the customer satisfied: "The key to succeeding with a paper route — and the restaurant business, he would later say — is to take care of the customer."
After high school and a stint in the Army, Cathy and his brother Ben borrowed $10,000 to open a restaurant in the Atlanta suburb of Hapeville in 1946. They called the restaurant Dwarf Grill because of its small size, later renaming it Dwarf House.
Tragedy struck in 1949 when two of Cathy's brothers, including Ben, died when a plane they were flying in crashed. The year before, Truett had married Jeanette McNeil, with whom he had three children: Dan, Don ("Bubba") and Trudy. She was a huge help in helping Cathy to get re-focused and succeed in business.
Cathy built his business one satisfied customer at a time. But when he built a second restaurant, it promptly burned down. With only one restaurant to manage, Cathy had more time to develop what would become his signature chicken sandwich we all know today.
He took his time. "I worked for years, adding this, taking away that," he wrote. "I was up to more than 20 seasonings and breading ingredients — twice as many as Col. Sanders had in his secret recipe."
Cathy tested all of his variations on customers, gauging their reactions. It wasn't long before Cathy had trademarked the name Chick-fil-A and begun selling his chicken sandwiches to restaurants across the South. And in 1967, Cathy opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant, in an Atlanta mall.
Chick-fil-A was unique in two ways. It was the first fast-food restaurant to serve a skinless, boneless-breast chicken sandwich, and the first to operate in shopping malls. It was an immediate success.
Over the succeeding decades, Chick-fil-A grew to more than 2,600 locations scattered across 47 states. Chick-fil-A opened its first freestanding restaurant in 1986 and its first drive-thru-only location in 1993.
At the time of his death at age 93, Cathy's net worth was $1.9 billion, according to Bloomberg.
Cathy's principles of success that may be of help to our Eagles:
-
Do not overburden yourself with debt early in life. Learn to manage your money and invest for the future.
-
Focus on the "winning behaviors" that develop self-respect and admiration of others. For a business like Chick-fil-A these included speed, accuracy, and cleanliness. For a student, these might include honesty, dependability, and persistence.
-
The importance of helping others. As he became wealthy, Cathy donated more of his time and money to charities and started one of his own, called the WinShape Foundation, which provides scholarships and foster homes to needy children. Cathy himself was a foster parent for more than 30 years. He liked to say that some 150 children called him Grandpa.
*** Whenever you can, thank you for supporting those businesses like the Chick-fil-A at Waterford Lakes that also support our Eagle teachers and students! ***
