Not Just Our Future, But Also Our Present
“You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us, for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God.”
2 Corinthians 9:11-12
Are Children the future of the Church, or are they our present? Yes and Yes.
For some adults, St. John’s children may not always be seen. Sunday School is held at the same time as our 10:30 worship. Our kids occupy the Education Wing, hearing stories about our faith, participating in activities that connect them to understanding the truth of Jesus. Even though they are not always in the Sanctuary our children are present and active, vital to our church.
If you look closely around St. John’s Ivyland, you can see signs of children’s ministry. Coloring books in the narthex, pictures on the walls, signs that state activities are happening are visual details. Take a moment next time you are in the church and listen, hear the small voice asking for just one more cookie at Grace Café or the stomps of feet that don’t quite understand to walk quietly. Feel the energy that the children share when they sing or play bells in the service and take a peek at the stage in the Fellowship hall as our True North VBS decorations start to take shape.
Every Sunday I get my greetings from our children, who remind me with their smiles that they are excited to be there. Just like adults, kids live out the commitment to be present and to share in God’s love. How we share that love continues to make a difference in the lives of others, especially our children. We actively minister and care for children who in turn minister and care for us.
No child can be at St. John’s without an adult making it so.
We have a small but mighty volunteer group - and we can always use more (even if it’s just for one day or one event). From Sunday School, Messy Church, family events, and of course Vacation Bible School, we work to create ministry experiences for all ages. (You may have seen that we are still looking for help with Vacation Bible School, but know that we are looking for you.) There are many ways for you to share your gifts.
Prayerfully consider how you can help encourage our children to be present and active and vital in our church.
My testimony is Children’s ministry is not what we do for children, it’s what we do with children. Children’s ministry connects us across generations.
Actions speak louder than words and our children recognize and see how God’s love shines from us. You continue to give to our children financially, physically, and prayerfully. Thank God for you! They do not always know the impact that we adults make on their lives, but God does and God is continuing to work through all of us to share the love of Jesus Christ!
Yes, the children are the future of our church; and along with us they are the vital present of St. John’s Ivyland as well.
Grace and Peace Be With You,
