Hello St. John’s Family,
Once again, our community has been devastated by tragedy. The shock and sadness of hearing two local boys, ages 13 and 9, being shot by their mother this week has been incredibly difficult to process. Reports are surfacing regarding the difficulties this family faced, including the impending eviction from the home they were living in. Difficulties that took any semblance of hope from a struggling mother. I cannot imagine the utter hopelessness that drove her actions; actions that will claim the joyful, energetic, and promising young lives of two beloved boys. These are the moments we must lean on our faith; lean on the trust that God can and will redeem tragedy. Lord, bring goodness and hope out of brokenness and mess of this tragedy.
As I shared with you recently, I don’t think many adults truly understand the difficulty that so many children and youth face in today’s world. Yes, there have always been challenges in adolescence. Today, though, is heavier. Our young people face constant pressure. From elementary school on, the pressure to succeed academically, in athletics, and in extracurriculars, all while maintaining a good image constantly presses down on them. Few elements of their lives are not public – often on social media – where all can see. And comment. And now, so many young people are trying to process a senseless tragedy under what feels like a microscope. Did I post the right words? Did I post quickly enough? Did you see so-and-so didn’t post anything? These are the kinds of pressures that our youth face constantly. Often, the heavier the situation at hand, the heavier the pressure is to respond.
As you pray for all who are struggling to process the heartbreaking events of this week’s shooting, please pray for our local children and youth, and those who care for them. Pray for the young people – including from St. John’s – who attend the schools the boys attended. Pray for the teachers and support staff who are on the front line of providing care and support. Pray for local families: families struggling to process a tragedy that has no good answers, and for families who are inevitably facing some of the same stressors that led to this outcome. Pray that all who are struggling may encounter the hope of Christ, a hope that can guide anyone through the pain and difficulty of seemingly hopeless situations.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Brad

WARRIOR COFFEE UPDATE
Many members of St. John’s have been supporters of the Warrior Coffee Project over the last five years so I wanted to give you an update on what has been happening.
Since March of 2020 and the outbreak of Covid, the Village of El Naranjito has been seriously affected by the pandemic. El Naranjito is a small village of about 350 persons set high in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. The closest town is Peralta (population 8,596 persons 2012 census) at the base of the mountain.
As you may remember, Lycoming College (a United Methodist affiliated liberal arts college located in Williamsport, PA) became affiliated with El Naranjito in 2015 as a partner to provide real-life learning experiences for Lycoming students and to assist the village to be self-sustaining.
In 2016, the village was dependent on one crop, coffee beans, for the sole source of their income. It was a village devoid of clean drinking water, social supports, electricity, schools and any sense of community organization that would allow the village to become self-sustaining in the 21st century. The village experienced a devastating loss of much of their coffee plants in 2013, and was not able to replace them. In 2013, the village was paid eight cents per pound for their coffee. A poor village was becoming poorer and more destitute.
In 2015, Lycoming started working with the village replacing coffee plants, and teaching the village to add additional crops for market, such as avocados and macadamias. Not only did a second and third crop create additional income for the village, but coffee is grown best in a shady environment. These new crops provided that to improve the quality of the coffee bean. By 2017, the village was getting $2.47 per pound for their coffee beans.
Then came Covid and everything shut down. The Lycoming Intern (a fulltime employee of the village cooperative) had to return to the States. The village, to protect itself, became isolated again. As we approached late 2021-22, there was renewed hope that the village could return to normal. The coffee bean crop in the fall of 2021 was one of their best in terms of quality and quantity. Then came the supply chain crisis and the village has been unable to ship the beans to the U.S. for roasting and distribution. We simply had no coffee to sell to people who wanted to support the village
But there is hope. We expect by June 1, to have Warrior Coffee available for the Grace Café and for you to purchase. Once again, we will be able to Fight for What’s Right One Cup at a Time.

God is strong and faithful, always working in our lives. We might get knocked down from time to time, but when we put our trust in God, we find the strength we need to get back up again. Jesus showed us how to face life with resilience. No matter what happened, Jesus relied on God to help Him accomplish the mission set before Him. This month, we will learn that because of Jesus, we can trust God no matter what. We can bounce back from whatever knocks us down and complete the mission God has for us.

A six-week Bible Study started Monday, April 18th at 6:30 PM
The concept of Jesus' human and heavenly nature is difficult to wrap our minds around. He's the God who formed the universe and, at the same time, knows your personal struggles...because he went through the same things. For thirty-three years Jesus felt everything you have ever felt. Weakness. Weariness. Sadness. Rejection. His feet got tired. His head ached. He was tempted and his strength was tested.
The purpose of this study is simple: by journeying through these six lessons you will get to know Jesus--and, therefore, God--like you never have before. And by learning more about the person Jesus was and is, we come to understand more clearly the people we were created to be.

Anxious People is about a group of people held hostage after a bank robbery who get to know each other, and they end up helping each other and helping the bank robber to find her way out of the mess. It's quintessential Backman: quirky, heartwarming and uplifting.
We will meet on Wednesday, May 11, at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM in the Grace Cafe. Please join us; all are welcome. Facilitators Barb Schneider and Carol Campbell
