Hello St. John’s Family,
Well… talk about a storm. The remnants of Hurricane Ida came through and impacted our region far beyond what most anticipated. We watched and waited through tornado alerts and sightings, then learned of catastrophic damage in local communities. We’re seeing pictures of motorists on Sackettsford Road being rescued from the roof of their submerged car as we deal with water in many of our basements and homes. Local creeks and the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers are flooding countless roads, homes, and businesses. Our St. John’s parking lot and external property saw significant flooding. Fortunately, most has receded with no inside damage – and our lot was still able to be a refuge for a few stranded motorists (while almost becoming an overnight shelter for one!).
It’s hard to believe how this time last week (August 26), Ida was just forming. Within a day, it was a Category 1 hurricane impacting Cuba, and two days after that it was the second-most powerful hurricane to ever make landfall in Louisiana. Three days later we experienced Ida’s devastating impact, as did New York (7.13 inches of rain fell in Central Park, almost doubling the previous single day record of 3.84 inches). Lives from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast are being turned upside down overnight, while cleanup and restoration will take years. It’s difficult to formulate words. Lord, have mercy.
Our Communion Offering this weekend will be given to support relief and recovery efforts from Ida. Please support this generously. In the coming weeks, I will also watch for and pass on opportunities for St. John’s to provide additional assistance, whether that be donations of goods or opportunities to offer physical assistance. Please be on the lookout for ways that we can help and keep all those impacted from this devastating storm in prayer.
One final thought: as I’ve spent time in prayer and reflection this morning, I can’t help but wrestle with the increasing impact we humans have on the earth. Climate change has become one of our most divisive topics, and that saddens me. It seems as if whenever the topic of our climate is raised, defenses go up (regardless of our viewpoint) as the divisiveness of our culture takes over. I wish people of faith from differing viewpoints could have meaningful dialogue about this… and I have to believe Christ does too.
As followers of Christ, God calls us to be faithful stewards of God’s amazing creation. I sense we’re called to pray for that. Pray for God to impress upon our hearts what faithful, ecologically and economically sustainable stewardship of creation looks like. Pray for open hearts and minds, to view others with differing opinions with the eyes of Christ. Pray for the humility and discernment needed to navigate difficult and complex challenges. And pray for the strength and resolve needed to implement what God reveals. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer…
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Brad

WORSHIP - SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

A Letter from the Pastor & Leadership Board
Congregants and Friends of St John’s,
A pandemic that has brought so much isolation, suffering, and difficulty continues to afflict us. The Delta variant has spread rapidly, including transmission among fully vaccinated persons. In multiple areas of our country healthcare professionals and hospital systems are pushed to their limits, and patients are suffering alone. While that level of spread has not occurred in our immediate area, case counts have risen steadily, as have the concerns that the imminent opening of schools will accelerate the rise in cases. How do we continue to be Christ’s Church, shining the light and hope of Christ into these uncertain times? I and the Leadership Board have spent significant time praying and discerning how to do that in a meaningful and safe way.
Throughout the pandemic, guidelines from the CDC and local public health authorities have been a significant barometer in our decisions. Those guidelines, in combination with vaccinations, have enabled us to gather and resume many ministries safely. Leadership is agreed that aligning with those guidelines is the appropriate course of action to enable us to continue to gather and expand our in-person activities.
Based on this, masks will be needed for indoor gatherings regardless of vaccination status, effective Sunday, August 22. As the local level of transmission/case counts decrease below the level of substantial spread as defined by the CDC, this will be relaxed for fully vaccinated persons. I recognize this isn’t what anyone wants – myself included. It is another sacrifice – a meaningful sacrifice made in love, offering our children and the most vulnerable among us an increased level of protection. Thank you for your patience and sacrifices to enable us to continue to gather together safely.
In conjunction with this update, significant discussions have occurred regarding our approach to worship and congregational ministries this fall. All discussions focused on our enabling our St. John’s family to engage with each other meaningfully and safely.
Beginning Sunday, September 12, we will proceed as
outlined below.
Fall Worship: two worship services will be offered, both in our Sanctuary. Contemporary Worship will move to 9am, with Traditional Worship following at 10:30am. Both services will encourage congregational participation while limiting direct contact (i.e., incorporating scripture readers, acolytes, musical offerings, etc.). Nursery coverage at both services will resume September 12, provided sufficient help can be coordinated (volunteers must be vaccinated). Grace Cafe' will remain closed at this time.
Music Ministries, including Choirs, Bell Choirs, and Praise Band will rehearse and participate in worship as scheduled by Director of Music Ministries.
Sunday School/Christian Education for Children & Youth: in-person classes will be offered weekly at 10:30am. Youth Group will meet on Sunday evenings; our Confirmation program will begin early October.
Small Group Ministries (Bible Studies, UMW/UMM, GriefShare, etc.) are encouraged to proceed/continue meeting.
Activities where food will be served and consumed indoors are to be approved by the Leadership Board. Participants in Bible studies, small groups, etc. are welcome to bring individual water bottles/drinks if desired. Outdoor activities are mask-optional. A complete guidance document will be posted on our website by early next week.
I want to thank you again for your patience and willingness to sacrifice out of love for each other as we continue to expand our ministries together!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Brad and the Leadership Board

SHARE YOUR STORY!
Advent is the season of preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas. This should be a time for families to come together in prayer and devotion.
This has been another really difficult year for all of us.
We look forward to a more normal Advent/Christmas season this year.
So, please consider writing a devotion for our Advent Devotional. As always we will have paper copies of the devotional available and, in addition we will be posting each day’s devotion online
If you are interested in contributing a devotion, please contact
Pastor Ruth.

BECOME AN ACOLYTE!
What is the job of an acolyte?
An acolyte’s role is to bring the light of Christ into the Sanctuary at the beginning of worship and then to take the light of Christ out into the world at the end of the service.
This is a great opportunity for our children to become involved in worship here at St. John’s.
