Pastor's Reflection

Hello St. John’s Family,

The frost that blanketed the ground the past few mornings gave me a vivid reminder that fall is marching onward. As the calendar flips to November, the theme of thankfulness immediately comes to mind. And yes, I am aware the Thanksgiving holiday is still a few weeks off! Yet Thanksgiving Day isn’t the only day that holds deep associations with giving thanks. November 1st is All Saint’s Day – an excellent opportunity for us to remember and give thanks for those who have been instrumental in showing us what faithfulness to God looks like.

As I spent some time reflecting and giving thanks for those instrumental in cultivating my faith, one of the first persons who came to mind was Denny Brillhart. “The Big Guy” was how Denny was known to all the youth of the congregation I grew up in, as Denny stood above just about everyone. That came in handy when he needed to give us “the look,” letting us know it was time to calm down (which, from my recollections, was more often than it should have been). Yet Denny was one of the warmest people you’ll ever meet. He cared deeply about every young person in that congregation. He’d show up, week after week, often teaching Sunday school in the morning and leading youth group in the evening. He was the first person who asked me if I was being called to be a pastor (for the record, I asked him if he was crazy). Above all else, he showed me and many others what it meant to faithfully serve Christ, right up to his final days. Though cancer ultimately claimed his earthly body, Denny’s legacy of faith lives on in the lives of so many who were blessed to know him. I can confidently say Denny’s witness is one of the key reasons I’m a pastor today.

This Sunday, we’ll remember and give thanks to God for the saints at St. John’s who entered into eternal life over the past year. We’ll join around our Lord’s table and commune with the saints across the ages. We’ll see glimpses of the glory that awaits all the faithful. As you prepare for worship, I invite you to reflect on those who were instrumental in cultivating your faith. Consider writing a note of thanks, sharing how that person’s faith has impacted you. If that person is alive, pass it on as a note of encouragement. If not, offer your note as a prayer of thanksgiving to Christ for the blessing of an amazing example. Above all, give thanks to God for the blessing of saints throughout our lives.

                                          Grace and Peace,
                                               Pastor Brad

Red Bird Truck Ministry UMW Honorees 2021

Each year St. John’s United Methodist Women select a person or persons within the church for their mission work, and a donation is made in their honor to the United Methodist Women’s Eastern District Conference. This year we recognized two people, Stew Horton and Rick Poll, for their ongoing mission work with the Red Bird Trailer ministry. Even with the many bumps and breakdowns and obstacles they faced this year, these two men kept the trailers open, packed and on the road to Beverly, Kentucky, where the people there just wait in anticipation to see the St. John's trailer come over the mountain.
Thank you and God bless
 to
Stew Horton and Rick Poll
 for their faithful service.
