#Cornerstone40 Spotlights

Cornerstone was founded in 1983 by a group of dedicated volunteers who recognized the need for domestic violence services in the Hennepin County suburbs. This was a time before significant public funding for domestic violence services and a time when this issue was rarely even discussed. Since these forward-thinking and caring volunteers started Cornerstone, we have expanded in size, scope and geographic footprint.

Our 40th anniversary is a chance to honor those who made this growth possible: volunteers, donors, board members, staff and the community. It is also an opportunity to reflect back on the strength and accomplishments of our agency and those we serve. This month, we highlight Cornerstone’s Emergency Services Program.

Cornerstone's Emergency Services Program

Cornerstone's Emergency Services Program is a safe place for adults and their children escaping a dangerous or escalating situation at home. Anyone in imminent danger of domestic/sexual violence and human trafficking can access Cornerstone’s Emergency Services Program. It includes a 35-bed Emergency Shelter, 24 hours/7 days a week hotline, crisis intervention and advocate support, a Hotel/Motel Partnership, and assistance with all basic needs.

In just 2022 alone, Cornerstone's Emergency Services Program provided 75 adults and children 3,679 nights of safe housing and 17,688 meals. And while in our emergency shelter, we take pride in the high-quality and revamped spaces we provide that allow participants to feel safe and comfortable. This has been an on-going effort for multiple years, made possible through Cornerstone supporters.

For the past two years, Cornerstone has been working to update and refresh our Emergency Shelter. We have been fortunate to have support from many great community partners to purchase new furniture and décor for our common areas and our individual units. The last piece of this project was to replace the beds in each unit and we are very grateful for the recent support from the Bloomington Rotary Club Foundation, the Edina Rotary Club Foundation, the Richfield Foundation and other wonderful supporters.  Thank you to all who have made our shelter upgrade possible!

Please call Cornerstone's 24/7 Emergency Services helpline, (952) 884-0330, or the Minnesota Day One Crisis Hotline at (866) 223-1111 if you or someone you know is seeking shelter.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Our greatest needs right now are $25 - $50 gift cards that allow us to quickly address the immediate needs of victims/survivors. Gift cards to Target and Walmart allow us to help families as needs arise for things like food, clothing and shoes, while Visa gift cards provide us even more flexibility to assist with things that can’t be found at big box stores, like gas and bus tokens.

Other items needed this month include anything currently listed on our Amazon Wishlist which we update regularly to reflect our programs' and participants' needs.

Donations may be dropped off at our Bloomington location Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. Please email courtneyp@cornerstonemn.org once you’ve dropped off a donation so that we may record your gift and properly thank you.

ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER NEEDS

Back to School Supplies Drive

With the new school year in sight, we are looking for a volunteer group interested in hosting a Back-to-School supplies drive on behalf of Cornerstone families and children. This group and its members would collect and donate school supplies. All school-related materials are welcomed, but we are especially in need of pencils and notebooks.

End of Summer Cookout (August 22nd 4:00 p.m. - 7 :00 p.m.)

Cornerstone will be hosting an End of Summer Cookout on August 22nd for families to have one more celebration before kids go back to school. We will have fun outdoor activities and games for everyone starting at 4:00pm and then dinner at 5:30pm. We will also have backpacks and school supplies available for families. But we need your help! If you are interested in volunteering for this fun event or donating school supplies to Cornerstone's families, please contact Courtney at courtneyp@cornerstonemn.org.

Tuesday Night Community Meals

We are looking for volunteer groups to host Tuesday night community meals for Cornerstone participants on September 19th and October 17th. If you and/or your group is interested in helping out or have questions, please contact courtneyp@cornerstonemn.org.

Volunteer groups will shop and prepare a meal for 15-25 people, serve the meal to Cornerstone families and then clean up. Groups are here from 4:30pm to 7:00pm including set up and cleaning. Group size is usually 5-7 volunteers.

Childcare Assistance

Cornerstone is looking for volunteers to assist with childcare while our participants attend meetings, go to appointments, or run errands. Shifts are weekly on Mondays from 4:00pm to 5:00pm and Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

Brooklyn Center Farmers Market

Cornerstone will have a resource table at the Brooklyn Center Farmers Market on August 24th and September 28th, and we are looking for volunteers to help share information about our services.

Marketing Experience

In addition, we are looking for volunteers with marketing experience to help get the word out about Cornerstone's services for sexually exploited youth.

If you are interested in learning more or would like to volunteer for any of these opportunities, please contact Courtney at courtneyp@cornerstonemn.org.

THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS!

A very special thank you to the Ameriprise Women Financial Advisors for their partnership in Cornerstone's work. We were so grateful for the opportunity to share information about Cornerstone at their annual meeting and for their incredibly generous gift of hundreds of cleaning supplies.

We are so grateful to the Vendor Management team at Western National Insurance Group for weeding and cleaning up Cornerstone's Peace Garden. It is great to have a contemplative, quiet space for staff, participants and volunteers to spend time outdoors.
