Researchers in a Frontiers in Nutrition study found anti-inflammatory diets were linked to significant reductions in Systolic Blood Pressure, Diastolic Blood Pressure, Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Total Cholesterol, and High-sensitivity C-reactive Protein.
High-sensitivity C-reactive protein is cardiac-specific, so this is great news for heart health prevention. If you feel you could benefit from an anti-inflammatory eating style, make an appointment!

Steve: A coronary calcium scan is a non-invasive CT scan that detects calcium deposits in the coronary arteries, which can indicate the presence of coronary artery disease. Many of my clients have this done prior to going on medication to see if it is necessary. It is also detects subclinical disease.
A recent Journal of the American College of Cardiology study found participants had no cardiovascular symptoms, yet their plaque burden and calcium scores at the beginning of the study were significantly associated with death during the 15 years of follow-up, even after taking risk factors and medication into account.
Unfortunately, other than medication, most physicians will not have suggestions for how to prevent coronary calcium progression. However, a study in Nutrition Journal suggests making anti-inflammatory lifestyle choices. Researchers found that individuals in the highest (more pro-inflammatory) compared to the lowest (more anti-inflammatory) lifestyle inflammation scores had more developed calcification incidence and progression.
Other Heart Health News
The combination of magnesium and zinc supplementation was associated with improved HDL cholesterol levels, better blood sugar control, higher antioxidant capacity, and lower inflammation, as reported in Lipids in Health and Disease.
A study in Nutrition Journal found that higher niacin intake may be associated with a reduced risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality among CVD patients.
Finally, a study from European Journal of Nutrition purports that lower pesticide exposure in participants on organic diets and higher consumption of organic foods was associated with reduced cardiometabolic risks.
