Yesterday afternoon, the Alabama State Health Officer, in coordination with the Governor's office, issued an order suspending certain public gatherings due to the risk of infection by COVID-19. In accordance with that directive, the Athens State University campus will be closed to students and the general public until further notice. Additionally, all University events are cancelled until further notice.

While in-person classes at the University will not be held, we will continue to offer all classes in an online format through Blackboard or another electronic means of learning delivery . The University's virtual education program permits our students to be served during this important time without risk to health.

The order authorizes the University to work with its employees to allow working from home or flexible work schedules, and that where it is not feasible for the University to allow employees to work from home, that employees should maintain social distancing (at least a six-foot distance between persons). Pursuant to that order, the University will initiate necessary staffing decisions to ensure flexibility for the health of its employees and the continued service of the University's students.

Although the University will be closed to in-person visits, students and others wishing to contact University personnel during this time may do so as follows:

As you know, this situation is ever-evolving, and future adjustments may be made. We continue to monitor the situation and will keep the campus community informed through regular email updates, the University website, and social media. Please feel free to contact the Athens State University Office of Marketing & Communications at communications@athens.edu with any additional questions you may have.

Thank you,
Philip K. Way, Ph.D.
