Coronavirus Update, RE: Field Day Cancelled, School Closed Friday
Dear Families,
I write to update you regarding the school’s precautionary measures and educational planning regarding coronavirus preparedness. We continue to closely monitor this highly fluid and uncertain situation, a challenge further exacerbated by often-inconsistent or unclear guidelines for schools. Having consulted our Board Chair, Chair of the Parents' Club, our school leadership team, and all relevant agencies, we have made the decision to cancel school tomorrow and instead begin spring break for students at the end of today (Thursday, March 12). Enrichment activities will take place today as planned, and ASP will be available until 6:00 p.m.
I know the cancelation of Field Day, in particular, will come as a disappointment to some, especially those who have already put time and effort into preparing for this event. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the decision to not hold school tomorrow. The situation with the coronavirus is extremely fluid and unprecedented in my professional experience, and I am committed to erring on the side of caution any time the wellbeing of the children and adults in our school community is at stake. We will do our very best to reschedule Field Day and this evening's now postponed middle division movie night.
St. John’s faculty and staff have spent the last few weeks preparing for how COVID-19 might affect our school. Should distance learning become necessary, our school is prepared. Academic continuity and quality are of utmost importance. Our faculty and staff are preparing grade and subject appropriate distance learning resources in the event of an unscheduled, extended school closing following spring break (March 16 - March 24). Our goal is to provide all students with learning resources that will reinforce and extend student learning during any school closure.
Thank you for your support and patience as we work to provide accurate and timely information. We understand these are trying times, which often produce anxiety and fear. Again, I apologize for any inconvenience caused. Your support during this time is critically important to help us provide a healthy and stable environment for our students, staff, and St. John’s community. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully, and communicate our plans throughout, especially those that may impact the return to school after the break.
