Dear Carroll Community,

The Delaware County Office of Public Health is making ongoing efforts to monitor for the coronavirus (COVID-19) in our area. At this time, there are no confirmed cases in the county, however, in the event this would change, health officials will notify the public and private schools. Archbishop John Carroll High School and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia are committed to protecting the health and welfare of its students, families and staff and want to remind everyone to practice the following:

  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects, especially when someone is ill.
  • Wash hands for 20 seconds under clean, running water. If you cannot wash your hands, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60-95% alcohol.

Archbishop Carroll's Nurse Lerario emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy environment in the classroom. "Please seriously evaluate your child’s health and ability to concentrate in school when he/she complains of headache, stomach pain, sore throat or cold symptoms even without a fever. Children often have no fever in the morning. Temperatures may rise as the day progresses. If the ailment is a minor one, a day or two of rest at home may eliminate the symptoms. If the ailment is more serious, resting at home may help to prevent complications."

The following symptoms may indicate a contagious illness and your child should be kept at home if any of the following are present:

  •  Fever of 100 degrees or higher the night prior to or the morning of school. The student must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school without the use of Tylenol, Motrin or any other fever-reducing medication.
  • Headache unrelieved by Tylenol or Motrin or any other headache relief medication.
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea within the past 24 hours. Students must be vomit/diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Sore throat lasting 2-3 days
  • Yellow or green drainage from the eyes or nose
  • Excessive coughing and cold symptoms
  • Rash
  • Dizziness/chills/body aches

Archbishop Carroll has taken steps to minimize the spread of illness and germs within the high school with hand sanitizer dispensers and disinfectant wipes placed throughout high traffic and common areas of the building. We will follow directives from the Archdiocese for the celebration of Mass, which were released to all clergy in response to the potential spread of the coronavirus. The Archdiocese will continue to monitor coronavirus developments closely and will take further action as necessary based on the guidance of national and local health agencies.

Additionally, we are creating a webpage that will serve as a central resource for Archbishop Carroll community members. Real-time updates, the status of ongoing decisions, and helpful resources will be posted here. The school will also proactively email (and possibly text/call) parents and students regarding any significant changes to regular school operations that would directly impact them throughout the coming days and weeks. Our community will be notified when the webpage launches next week.

We will continue to keep our community informed as new information becomes available.

Sincerely,
Dr. Anchen Schulz
