Dear Friend,

I hope you and your family are staying safe and healthy during this unprecedented health crisis. It was a pleasure speaking with 1,300 of you on the evening of March 25 th during a tele-town hall. If you were unable to join, I will be holding more in the future and I hope you will be able to participate.

I wanted to reach out with some information concerning the current situation. Please continue to exercise social distancing, as we fight this virus together.
Where Are We At Right Now?
As of April 2 nd , the state of Michigan has 20,346 confirmed cases of COVID-19. This includes:
  • 2,626 cases in Macomb County
  • 140 cases in St. Clair County
  • 64 cases in Lapeer County
  • 27 cases in Tuscola County
  • 22 cases in Sanilac County
  • 4 cases in Huron County.

Unfortunately, Michigan has lost 959 citizens to this virus. Please keep their families in your prayers. Michigan updates their numbers every day at 3:00 pm. For updated information, visit the following sites:

The state of Michigan has also set up a hotline for all Coronavirus questions and concerns. The hotline is open seven days a week from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Hotline: 1-888-535-6136
What is Closed?

Over the past few weeks, Governor Whitmer has ordered many closures to slow the spread of the virus. This includes schools, bars, restaurants, gyms, theatres, and more. Bars and restaurants are still open for take-out and delivery so please support your local small businesses during this trying time.

Keep an eye on your local county websites in charge of this crisis for updated local information.

Governor Whitmer is expected to announce an extension of the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order this morning. This order has mandated the closure of non-essential businesses, and to have people stay home as much as possible. Visit the Michigan Coronavirus Website for up-to-date information concerning all of the executive orders Governor Whitmer has issued.

On April 7th, the Michigan Legislature extended Governor Whitmer’s State of Emergency
until the end of April. This is consistent with the President’s current recommendation that the federal government social distancing guidelines remain in place until April 30th.

Resources for School Children

With school closed, are resources available for children to get food? How is the education going to continue for our children?

Many schools throughout our district have put a system in place for all kids throughout their school district to receive breakfast and lunch during the closure. School Districts are also looking at how to continue learning through online systems. Take a look at your schools options below. Michigan Schools are closed through the end of the school year in June 2020.

What has the Federal Government Done?
  • Congress and the Trump Administration has been busy working together to bring relief to Americans across the county including our neighbors in the 10th district.
  • On March 27th, President Trump signed the CARES Act, the largest stimulus package in American history. This Act has a lot of parts, including checks sent to individuals, an unemployment boost, help for the hardest hit corporations, and many other things. For more information, click here.
  • The Small Business Administration have been working to get loans to small businesses to help them during this trying time. Visit the SBA website to learn more.
  • The Trump Administration has postponed Tax Day to July 15th. You now have an extra three months to file and pay your taxes for 2019. The state has also extended the state tax deadline to July 15th. For more information, click here.
  • The Administration has closed both the southern and northern boarders to non-essential traffic to slow the spread of the disease. If you trade across the border, this does not impact you. Overall, the Administration is recommending that you postpone all international travel.
  • The President has enacted the Defense Production Act, which will help us get the necessary supplies to hospitals across the country.
  • The President has sent two Navy medical ships to the hardest hit areas of the country to help.

How Can I Help?
The best way for you to help right now is to ensure you are following the guidelines from the CDC and the State. Please ensure you are washing your hands, covering your cough, and staying at least 6 feet away from others.

Outside of this, there are many organizations that are desperate for help right now as they continue to fight this pandemic. If you are healthy, consider donating blood to the Red Cross, as they are in a critical state. Can you sew, reach out to your local hospital to see if you can help make masks. Do you have a few extra dollars, consider donating to local non-profits that are helping our most vulnerable.

We will all get through this together. I look forward to seeing everyone out and about soon!

Sincerely,
Lisa McClain
