Ahhh, sunshine! How we love the enticing rays of summer and the joyful focus of the Correct Quarter. What better way to "awaken your senses and experience your joy" then to spend time outdoors in the company of family and friends. I particularly enjoy an early morning hike and the opportunity to witness an uplifting sunrise. If that's not your thing, beat the afternoon heat with a dip in the pool, or take in the gentle sounds of a warm summer evening on the porch.

At Healing Waters, the Correct Quarter is also about correcting bad habits. During this time we bring our focus to the young people in our lives, coming of age and setting out on a path that will guide them to adulthood. Now is the time for them to correct bad habits and develop discipline where it matters. For all us adults, this means setting a good example. Whether we realize it or not, our actions and behaviors are always under observation and ultimately teach our younger generations how to navigate through life.

As we continue through the Correct Quarter, think about how your actions influence the young ones that surround you. Find an activity to enjoy together and experience it to the fullest, relishing in the nuances of the day. Tune into your senses the next time you're at play and feel how they heighten your Amanda Goreckiexperience of life-it's amazing how beautiful it can be.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER SPECIAL EVENT

Join us on Thursday, September 19 at 7 p.m. for a special Mother-Daughter event where we will be discussing the value of a healthy self image. Plastic surgeon, Dr. Kelly Killeen, and the Healing Waters nursing and esthetic teams will be leading a discussion on the perception of beauty in today's society. We will explore magazine images and talk about the media's portrayal of "ideal beauty". This is an excellent opportunity to open a line of communication between mother and daughter on a difficult topic that many females struggle with from a young age.

Attendees are also invited to receive a facial at a discounted rate before the event between the hours of 3 and 7 pm. We want to encourage attendees to use this time to spend together. Enjoy a facial, then go for dinner at one of Bradley Fair's many wonderful restaurants before reconvening at Healing Waters for this special evening event.

beauty tip Summer down time is an excellent time to schedule your plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures. Take advantage now during the break from school year obligations and before the onset of the holiday hustle and bustle.

body products

With the arrival of the Correct Quarter we are excited to introduce our new line of Correct body care products. This line includes bath gel, body lotion, gelled sugar scrub, bath salts, body butter, and candle. The Citrus Nectar fragrance is a light clean scent reminiscent of freshly extracted fruit nectar. The Correct body products are so delightful we might even call them habit-forming (but the good kind).

A HEALTHY SELF BODY IMAGEgirl winking

BY KELLY KILLEEN, MD  As most of us are aware, today's media is filled with unrealistic portrayals of the "female ideal"-literally flawless skin, zero cellulite, perfectly round breasts, thick voluminous hair, and many other unattainable features (for most of us). The reality is those images are the result of heavy makeup; hair extensions; special garments that tug, bolster, or flatten one out; and Photoshop. A lot of the women we see in fashion magazines and the like may also be using unhealthy means to attain their physique: eating disorders, drugs, and stimulants are often involved. And quite frankly, some of these women may have also had plastic surgery.

This raises a difficult point about the role of plastic surgery in our quest for beauty, a point I will address shortly, but let's not start there. The most critical element in attaining "beauty" begins with embracing a healthy lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet and exercising not only makes you look great, but also makes you feel great. This doesn't mean excessive calorie restriction or three hours a day at the gym. This means eating ample vegetables, lean meats, and fruit; avoiding highly processed foods; and engaging in moderately strenuous physical activity at least three days a week.*

It's also important to surround yourself with positive messages that reinforce your strengths and that develop your interests. Avoid situations, people, and media outlets that promote an unhealthy internal dialogue. A negative, destructive internal dialogue promotes insecurity and unhappiness.

So where does plastic surgery fit within this picture? Plastic surgery offers options for healthy individuals that are unhappy with elements of their appearance and can't address it through other means. This includes individuals who feel like they've lost something they once had and surgery is the only option to help restore their previous self (e.g. a mother who's abdomen has been permanently stretched as the result of childbirth). It's for people who have a physical anomaly that makes them feel excessively self-conscious (e.g. sagging skin after extreme weight loss). Plastic surgery can help people who have a genetic defect or have been the victim of an accident or illness that left them physically disfigured, including cancer survivors in need of reconstructive surgery.

Additionally, plastic surgery can help individuals seeking balance in their physique. This could include a woman electing to undergo breast augmentation or having her saddlebags removed to balance out her figure. However, what is appropriate for one individual doesn't apply to all of us and the important piece is that any decision begins with a healthy state of mind.

Being unhealthy or unsafe to alter your appearance is never worth it. Skin color of all sorts, curves, and asymmetries are what make us beautiful and unique. At Healing Waters we want you to be happy with being you, not change who you are. Enhancing your natural beauty in a healthy way is our goal.

*Before beginning any diet or exercise program you should speak with your physician.
