Library Anniversary Party
Saturday, June 25, 10:30AM-1:30PM
|
|
Our historic building opened in June, 1901. Help us celebrate 121 years in our building! Many of you could not join us for our grand opening in December when we completed the addition, so we hope you can join us for a fun-filled day celebrating our library’s history! For the kids we will have our Summer Reading Kick-Off party starting at 10:30AM featuring Mr. Aaron and then Stella the Miniature Horse will be here at 11:30. Pick up your summer reading log and enjoy a frozen treat!
There will be Maker Space Demonstrations starting at 10:30 for all ages. Try out our new GlowForge laser engraver, one of our new sewing machines, our button maker, or our new Cricut Maker 3. Use our poster-sized printer, or convert old films, photos or audios in our Memory Lab.
At Noon Rudy VanVeghten will give a special presentation on the history of the Meredith Public Library and will honor some folks who helped to make the library what it is today. Refreshments will be served.
The Benjamin M. Smith Library was dedicated on June 17, 1901. Benjamin Smith wanted to build the library for the town to honor his parents. In 1899 at the Meredith town meeting the citizens voted to purchase the land where the library now sits and Mr. Smith agreed to build a library for not less than $10,000.
Featuring modern conveniences such as electricity, a toilet room and a furnace, Mr. Smith spared no expense when it came to his generous gift. During our renovation/expansion, we restored the original hardwood floors, replicated some of the original stenciling and used gas inserts to make our fireplaces functioning again. There will be library tours available after Mr. VanVeghten’s presentation.

We had a large group of folks join us in for our Memory Lab in the Maker Space. They brought in video and audio cassettes, photos and slides that needed to be converted. Pictured, Ethan brought in about a dozen 8mm films from the 60's of his family that he had never seen. It was fun for all of us to see what was on them!
Be sure to join us for Maker Space demonstrations at our anniversary party on June 25!

Mystery Book Group
One by One by Ruth Ware
Thursday, June 14, 10:30AM
At this time there is not a Zoom option, but call or email if you will not be able to attend in person. Getting snowed in at a beautiful, rustic mountain chalet doesn’t sound like the worst problem in the world, especially when there’s a breathtaking vista, a cozy fire, and company to keep you warm. But what happens when that company is eight of your coworkers…and you can’t trust any of them.

Brown Bag Book Group
Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz
Thursday, June 30, noon. Feel free to bring you lunch. Refreshments will be served.
Taken from a group home at twelve, Evan was raised and trained as part of the Orphan Program, an off-the-books operation designed to create deniable intelligence assets—i.e. assassins. Evan was Orphan X. He broke with the Program, using everything he learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man.

It’s been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend.
One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of “what do people need?” is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how. They’re going to need to ask it a lot.
