NABT Honors 2023 Outstanding Biology Teachers
Established in 1962, the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (OBTA) is one of the most prestigious honors NABT gives to biology teachers. Each year, the program attempts to recognize an outstanding biology educator (grades 7-12) in each of the 50 states; Washington, DC; Canada; Puerto Rico; and overseas territories.
This year, NABT was proud to name 19 OBTA Honorees. These teachers join the ranks of over 3000 teachers who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, devotion to their students, and a degree of professionalism that their professional colleagues recognize as truly "outstanding."
The 2023 OBTAs will be honored during a special presentation at the NABT Professional Development Conference in Baltimore, and we encourage you to learn more about this year's honorees by reading their biographies.

Correction: Sean B. Carroll Retiring From Tangled Bank Studios
After 12 years in the position, Dr. Sean B. Carroll is stepping away from his role as Head of Studio, having both launched the popular HHMI Night at the Movies at the NABT National Professional Development Conference and established Tangled Bank Studios in 2011. He will remain active in several studio projects and return to biological research as an HHMI Investigator.

Jared Lipworth will become the next Head of Tangled Bank Studios. He has been with TBS since 2017 as Executive Producer and Head of Outreach and Impact.
“It has been a great adventure growing HHMI Tangled Bank Studios into a first-class film production company,” said Carroll in a statement. “It has been a privilege to work with incredibly talented storytellers here and around the world. I am proud that we have been able to inspire so many people through powerful stories and garner the accolades of scientists, audiences and film critics alike. The studio will be in great hands with Jared at the helm.”
This year's HHMI's Night at the Movies will include dinner, drinks, and trivia before a sneak peek of Wild Hope season two, which spotlights changemakers from around the globe who are restoring and protecting our natural world.
After the screening, Sean B. Carroll will be joined by Jared Lipworth and Laura Bonetta, Senior Director of BioInteractive, to talk about the episodes and celebrate Sean's career as a scientist, advocate, and storyteller.

Nominate a K-6 Grade STEM Educator for the PAEMST!
STEM educators go above and beyond, even as they face challenges in and out of the classroom. They deserve recognition for the amazing work they bring to their community and school!
Celebrating 40 years of recognizing exceptional educators, the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest honor bestowed by the White House for K-12 STEM teaching. Help us celebrate a deserving K-6th grade teacher in your community by nominating them for a Presidential Award.
Why Nominate? Recipients of the award receive:
- a certificate signed by the President of the United States,
- a paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities,
- a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, and
- an opportunity to engage with a cohort of over 5,200 PAEMST alumni across the nation.

Project Dragonfly
Accepting Applications for 2024 Programs
Miami University’s Project Dragonfly is accepting applications for 2024 Earth Expeditions graduate courses that offer extraordinary experiences at global field sites in 15 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. http://EarthExpeditions.MiamiOH.edu
Earth Expeditions can build toward the Global Field Program (GFP), a master's degree that combines summer field courses worldwide with web learning communities so that students can complete the GFP master's part-time from anywhere in the United States or abroad. Applications are now being accepted until January 28. Courses begin in May 2024. http://GFP.MiamiOH.edu
Project Dragonfly also offers the Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) master's degree that combines web instruction from Miami University with face-to-face experiential learning and field study through several AIP sites in the U.S. Applications for Miami's 2024 cohorts are being now being accepted until February 28, with place-based experiences provided at zoos and botanical gardens in Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Jacksonville, New York, San Diego, and St. Louis. http://AIP.MiamiOH.edu
