Updated Construction News

Construction crews have made significant progress over the past months and are ready to begin the final phase of construction along U.S. 69. Major traffic switches are planned for northbound U.S. 69 from 139th Street to 103rd Street in early May. The traffic switches will move U.S. 69 travers onto completed sections of pavement and open up new areas of work for the contractor. Unfortunately for travelers who access I-435 from U.S. 69 northbound or College Blvd, the traffic switches will require ramp closures and detours. KDOT appreciates drivers' patience as we work through the final months of construction.

Long-term closures for ramps at I-435/U.S. 69/College Blvd. are scheduled for May 7. Detours and other information are in the next article below.

Eastbound and westbound I-435 from Quivira Road to Antioch Road in Overland Park will be fully closedto traffic beginning Friday, May 9. Additionally, the ramp for westbound I-435 to southbound U.S. 69 will be fully closed. More information is available below.

Construction is progressing well at U.S. 69 and 167th Street. The 167th Street interchange at U.S. 69 was fully closed in early April to begin reconstruction. The reconstruction will add south-facing ramps for access to and from both directions of U.S. 69. 167th Street will also be reconstructed, expanding the street to four lanes. Roundabouts will be added at the 167th Street and U.S. 69 ramp intersections. The closure will last through early October.

Noise wall installation is progressing well and will continue throughout the summer. Additionally, preparations for toll system installation are happening now. More information is in the newsletter article below.

The traffic switch will move traffic into a barrier-separated, head-to-head configuration.

KDOT and KTA Text Scam

Be aware of a nationwide texting scam about unpaid tolls. Neither KDOT nor the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) sends unsolicited text messages. If you receive a suspicious text, do not click links. Learn more about identifying and reporting these scam messages. Individuals who have received a scam message may report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.

Behind the Scenes

Crews have begun installing technology that will support the operation of the express lanes along northbound U.S. 69. The sign above will communicate to drivers the cost to travel in the express lane. The sign will display the toll for a 2-axle vehicle with a KTAG to travel in the express lane to its destination. The two general purpose lanes will remain free to all travelers. Please note: All signs will remain covered until the lanes open to traffic.
