FTC Announces Top Scams of 2024


In 2024, fraud losses surged to $12.5 billion, with one in three fraud reports involving financial loss. Online scams accounted for over $3 billion in losses, while phone scams led to a higher median loss of $1,500 per person.

Younger adults, particularly those aged 20-29, reported losing money more often than older adults, with online shopping scams and fake investment opportunities being the top culprits. Imposter scams remained the most reported, and bank transfers were the primary method of payment to scammers, totaling $2 billion in losses.
