Illinois Municipalities Fight to Restore Local Funding
|
SSMMA and other COGs delivered a message to Springfield: Hands Off Our Money!
SSMMA has joined forces with nine-area Councils of Government (COGs) along with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus (MMC) to launch a new initiative aimed at restoring Local Government Distributive Fund (LGDF) payments to Illinois municipalities.
On Tuesday, we launched our public campaign with a press conference, featuring local mayors representing 275 Chicago-Metro communities. Our mayors urged state lawmakers and Governor Pritzker to resist further cuts to LGDF and to restore the funding levels from 6.06 percent back to 10 percent, which had been originally promised to municipalities.
|
“Municipalities depend on LGDF dollars to lessen the burden on homeowners who pay property taxes while keeping municipalities operating and providing basic services,” said Hazel Crest Village President Vernard Alsberry, Jr., Past President of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association (SSMMA), which serves 45 communities. “Illinoisans pay among the highest property taxes in the nation and cannot afford further increases during these challenging and uncertain times.”
