Rabbi Kenter's D'var
Last Shabbat, Mayor Jim Watson came out as a gay man in an article that he wrote for the Ottawa Citizen. Among the reasons that it took him 40 years to come out publicly was because, "(s)wirling around my mind were thoughts like how my family and friends would react. Would it affect my relationship with my constituents?" He was concerned about how he would be received by his community and what it would mean for his relationships to come out. Even though it has been almost 20 years since same sex marriage was legalized in Canada and other politicians have come out as members of the LGBTQ+ community, those fears still lingered, even as a long serving and well regarded politician.
Even though we would like to believe that we are past the need to publicly affirm our support and love for the LGBTQ+ community, there are still those who wonder whether they will be accepted for who they are even though others have already been. Will it change how my family or community sees me? One of the ways that we attempt to assure that all members of the community know that they are loved for who they are is by celebrating Pride Shabbat on annual basis. Reminding our community that we love you no matter who you love. This is obviously not the only way that we represent this value. We changed our membership forms so that they say Adult 1 and 2 rather than implying that a family membership is made up of a man and a woman. We have performed same sex marriages and brought LGBTQ+ individuals through the process of converting to Judaism. Yet, without Pride Shabbat, there would not be the same opportunity to declare publicly that no matter who you are, at KBI you are safe and you are loved.
This week's Torah portion reminds us that actions have consequences. When we do the right thing, good things happen and when we act incorrectly, bad things happen. We are proud to host Pride Shabbat together with the Ottawa Jewish community this weekend here at KBI. Because what we do matters and this good act, I am sure will lead to many more.
Shabbat Shalom

There are many blessings that happen in all of our lives such as the birth of a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild; the engagement or marriage of a loved one; or a promotion at work or a volunteer award. These events lend balance to times of sadness, such as the death or illness of a loved one. We at Kehillat Beth Israel are grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with you - to be a source of community in both times of celebration and times of sorrow. Below you will find some of the events in our community from the last few weeks. Please continue to share with us your happy occasions so that we may share them
here in the future.

And in the spirit of gratitude, we also take this opportunity to thank the members of our community for their charitable gifts to the synagogue. We could not do the important work that we do at Kehillat Beth Israel without your generous support. We are so thankful for your continued contributions that allow us to grow and thrive.
