WE RISE & WIN Together

Reviving Our Ailing Democracy:

Will Chaos and Cruelty Propel a Rising Movement to Thrive Together?

July 2025 Newsletter

“An old man says to his grandson: ‘There’s a fight going on inside me. It’s a terrible fight between two wolves. One is evil–angry, greedy, jealous, arrogant, and cowardly. The other is good—peaceful, loving, modest, generous, honest, and trustworthy. These two wolves are also fighting within you, and inside every other person too.’ After a moment, the boy asks, ‘Which wolf will win?’ The old man smiles. ‘The one you feed.’”

Savvy Stewards Can Turn Chaos and Cruelty Into a Rising Movement to Thrive Together

It is neither feasible nor helpful for everyone to do the same thing. However, each of us can contribute something within a vibrant movement ecology. As nonviolent strategist Julia Roig explains, this kind of “broad-front organizing” enables us to harness the upsides of each approach—such as protecting the most vulnerable (block), engaging in healthy conflict resolution (bridge), or offering a unifying vision for the future (build)—all while minimizing potential downsides.

The power in that maneuver ultimately springs from the fact that freedom for any of us depends on freedom for all of us. This idea of "interconnected freedom" is central to our quest to thrive together. A thriving future also depends on our will to stick together, with unwavering solidarity in the face of adversity and uncertainty.

ARE YOU HUNGRY FOR CONNECTION & JUSTICE?

TAKE ACTION TODAY and TOMORROW with others across our network before it's too late to save 51,000 lives a year

WHY IT MATTERS

16 million Americans will lose health coverage

Cuts and restrictions that will decimate Medicaid and ACA coverage

7+ million more people will face food insecurity Including 2+ million children who would see their SNAP food assistance terminated or cut

2 million children will lose Child Tax Credit

While 17 million children remain left out of the full credit

51,000 Americans will die each year due to these cuts.

All to fund $1.1 trillion in tax breaks for the wealthy.

Let Congress know - we can't let this happen and this is not who we are as a nation.

Over the last two weeks, people from 40 states across our network of networks have engaged in a solidarity fast ACROSS party lines to ask our Congresspeople to protect the interests of children, older adults, working families, and rural communities who will suffer disproportionately from the cruel cuts proposed in the megabill.

Despite hearing from so many of us--and thousands of others, the Senate passed the bill.

This call to your House representatives is the last action we can take to say that this bill is against our core values as a nation and will harm us all.

Please take 2 minutes to write or call your house representatives--in a living democracy, our words and actions matter. Make yours count.

Beware: Perception is Not Reality

With everything going on around us right now, it looks like everything sucks. Looking into an even more destabilized future is not easy and the prospect of more drama is daunting. However, even acts of authoritarian overreach can unexpectedly galvanize broad coalitions. Those previously sidelined can rise when encouraged. How can we orient so we can ground ourselves better for these times ahead?

“One of my favorite definitions of democracy is from Valerie Bunce who says, ‘Democracy is unique among all other forms of government because it demands that people accept uncertainty over outcomes in order to have certainty over process’... In a democracy, people have to be willing to commit to sharing power with other people without knowing if their side is going to win. It's a challenge that's only exacerbated in diverse and heterogeneous societies. And so when their side loses, people have to be willing to accept the results. They have to commit to this project of power sharing across difference, even under conditions of uncertainty.”

- Hahrie Han, quoting Valerie Bunce

Powerful, Mighty Actions to Defend Democracy

For many American citizens and organizations, then, the cost of opposition has risen markedly...America has, with stunning speed, descended into a world in which opponents of the government fear criminal investigations, lawsuits, tax audits and other punitive measures- How will we know when we have lost our democracy?

Thought Piece

Return of the Citizen in Democracy We need a larger story that brings back “the citizen,” in Frankfurter’s foundational sense.

This is a narrative that is “federalist,” recognizing the importance of public governance, and also “popular,” a We the People” story of the independent agency and authority of the people.

In the broad, diverse civic ferment of the present moment, there are examples of efforts that clearly build on and revitalize the tradition of citizen-centered problem solving as highlighted in this piece.

Block, Bridge & Build: A Framework to Forge a More Democratic Future

By Julia Roig

Rooted in theory and practice of conflict transformation, civil resistance, and democratic renewal, Block-Bridge-Build offers a framework that aims to resist harm (block), facilitate dialogue across divides (bridge), and construct more inclusive, resilient futures (build), particularly in response to the spread of authoritarianism.

100 days: Where We Are Now

To undo democracy and consolidate personal power, autocrats need to force every other powerful actor and institution in a political system to submit to their rule. One by one, they need each politician, journalist, CEO, or civil society leader to look around, see others retreating (or even just hesitating), and decide to do the same: decide to not resist. It’s a domino effect built on perception: autocrats rely on appearing unstoppable, on projecting that resistance is futile— so you might as well get out of the way and save yourself.

Leaders committed to democratic legitimacy can (and do) see their political stock rise and fall in their time in office, but autocrats depend on steady accumulation of power. They need momentum. Without it, the illusion of inevitability collapses and so does their grip on control.

Dose of Joy

Poem from FITO Network

Winston Salem NC

We’ve been thinking a lot about the moment we’re in. Yes—it’s a time of change. Of upheaval.

Of visible cracks in the systems we’ve inherited.

For many, it can feel daunting, stressful, frightening.

But we must also remember: it’s not the first.

Many across the world have lived with—and through—crisis. For a long time.

But the field is waking up.

We’re here today with spreadsheets and smiles.

But don’t be fooled—this is political.

We believe that networks are a form of liberation.

A form of power.

Not the power to dominate, but the power to transform.

To shift systems by shifting relationships.

To redistribute visibility, voice, and resources.

But networks alone are not enough.

Each network carries deep trust, wisdom, and vision.

But no single network—no matter how brilliant—can shift complex systems alone...

We are The Founders

We the People are the true Founders.

We always have been, even when deemed invisible under the law. We have the power to realize a nation that loves, honors, and serves all- deserving of the generations to come. It is ours to build together.

We know that the signers of the Constitution didn't include all of us when they penned the words "We the People." But we, the people of our multiracial democracy, have always believed in more.
