Correction: Winter Break Closure Dates
To: All staff
Oct. 21, 2021

Note: An earlier version of this message listed incorrect dates for the paid holidays.

Each year, UC Merced closes in late December for the winter break. For employees, the days consist of a combination of four paid holidays and a number of "curtailment" dates that can be covered by vacation time, compensatory time (if eligible) or leave without pay.

This year, the university will officially close for seven business days from Thursday, Dec. 23, through Friday, Dec. 31, and reopen for business Monday, Jan. 3, 2022. The closure period includes four paid holidays (Dec. 23, 24, 30, 31) and three curtailment days (Dec. 27, 28, 29).

Employees with insufficient vacation accruals to cover the curtailment days are eligible to take up to three vacation days in advance during the campus closure, in accordance with Personnel Policies for Staff Members 2.210, Absence from Work. For represented employees, curtailment days are handled according to existing contract provisions or collective bargaining, where applicable. Employees with questions regarding the campus closure should contact Employee and Labor Relations.

Some job functions are required even while campus is closed. We ask that employees and units who plan to work during the campus closure period do so in close communication with their governing dean or vice chancellor. Departments planning to maintain operations during the campus closure period should also notify Facilities Management as soon as possible.
