Space Coast Symphony Orchestra's
Cosmic Trilogy

For many of us on the Treasure Coast, the concept of outer space becomes just a bit more real every time a rocket pushes off from a launch pad at the John F. Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island. From his Brevard County home, Maestro Aaron Collins, conductor and artistic director of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, is fortunate to have a front row seat on launch days.
Inspired, seven years ago Collins began a musical partnership with NASA with the first in a series of concerts that matched music of The Planets, Earth Odyssey, and The Cosmos, with mesmerizing and exciting video from NASA. About the Cosmic Trilogy concerts coming up this weekend Collins said, ”This multi-media concert combines the best of all three. The people of Central Florida have witnessed firsthand mankind's entry into space and it remains a subject of awe and interest for all of us.”
Cosmic Trilogy ends the10th anniversary season of the symphony orchestra. Music on the program includes selections from Holst’s The Planets, Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra , and Dvorak's New World Symphony. Christopher Marshall's The Cosmos, which conceptualizes the origins of the universe, will be showcased, Collins said.

The video imagery shown during the performance will be “breathtaking images of far distant galaxies, nebulae and other astronomical wonders captured by cutting edge instruments on earth and in the heavens.”
Collins welcomes two unique guests to participate in the concerts. "For this special program, we have two NASA legends narrating ..., Hugh Harris and George Diller. Both are known as the ‘voice of NASA.’ Anyone who has watched NASA launch astronauts on space shuttles, or as planetary missions left Earth for distant points out in the Solar System and heard the countdown reach zero know these two men’s voices. We are thrilled beyond belief to have both of them on this special program, which celebrates the achievements of NASA."

SCSO is one of very few orchestras in the country to perform all year, Collins said. In addition to the main orchestra, there’s the Space Coast JAZZ Orchestra, the Space Coast Symphony Wind Orchestra, a youth orchestra and several ensembles.
In keeping with the SCSO mission to “help ensure the symphonic tradition for the enjoyment of future generations,” Symphony for Everyone, a pay-what-you-can ticketing program is in place for all Space Coast symphony concerts. The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra’s 2019-2020 season has been announced and can be viewed online at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org . The phone number, toll free, is 855-252-7276, and a free, interactive app for mobile devices is available from Google Play and the Apple App store.

Cosmic Trilogy is at Scott Center for Performing Arts, Melbourne, May 25 at 7 p.m. and at Vero Beach HS Performing Arts Center May 26, 3 p.m.

Let's Move it! $5 per foot
If your neighbors tell you they’re moving house, you could reasonably expect to see a moving van in their driveway, with burly guys loading boxes and furniture as you wave goodbye. When someone at the Laura Riding Jackson Foundation says they’re moving house, you know they’re taking the concept to a whole other level, One Foot at a Time, with the Let’s Move It! campaign.

 Photo: Laura Riding Jackson
The Environmental Learning Center’s Wabasso campus has been home since 1992 to the Florida vernacular (Florida cracker) house where writer Laura Riding Jackson lived and worked with her husband, Schuyler Jackson. Before that, the house had been on 11 acres of citrus grove where the couple raised organic fruit to ship north. It was after her 1991 death that the house literally got picked up and moved on a flatbed truck the first time around. That was easy compared to this trip, said Susan Boyd, Laura Riding Jackson Foundation's treasurer, because it was a much shorter distance.

Photo: House on the move
This move will be 12 miles, to the Vero Beach campus of Indian River State College. LRJF’s president, Marie Stiefel, said, “Its place near the Brackett Library will allow many more residents to visit.” The hope is that it could become a destination for writers. IRSC is also offering the use of campus space for LRJF workshops.

At 12 miles, the cost breaks down to $5 per foot with a total price of well over $300 thousand to make the trip. The house will be moved in four sections, one of them being the entire top of the house. That figure, by the way, does not include putting the house back together again or the restoration needed for its preservation.

Photo: Laura Riding Jackson home
Some very generous people are getting behind the move. The Indian River Community Foundation stepped up to present a $20,000 gift from an anonymous donor. Boyd said,”This wonderful gift of $20,000 is being matched through a previous grant from the Indian River Community Foundation. Each dollar that is donated up to $50,000 will be matched.” No date for the move has been set yet.

To join the Let’s Move it! campaign and buy a foot or more of travel for the house, get details on the website, www.lauraridingjackson.org or call 772-569-6718. That’s also the way to get information about any of the many workshops for adults, teens, and middle-schoolers. Summer camps are getting underway for the younger set. There will be one just for boys, Slam Dunk, at the Gifford gym. The Laura Riding Jackson Writing Center is at 1914 14th Ave., Vero Beach.
Wild Thing BINGO! for Backus
I learned a trick to winning at Bingo last year at the A.E. Backus Museum and Gallery’s Wild Bingo luncheon. I’ll share it with you here before you make your reservation for the this year's Wild About Bingo event June 7.

All through the many door-prize announcements and the first five Bingo games, I watched happy people heading for the loaded prize tables and picking out what they wanted. So, here’s the trick, seriously: I looked my Bingo cards in the eye and said, “I didn’t come here just to have fun. I came here to win!” And then pith helmet-sporting Bingo caller Marshall Adams, also executive director of the Backus, shouted the first number of the final game. A few minutes later, I was at the prize table picking out a pair of earrings donated to the affair by Backus jewelry artist Sue Ritter.
Obviously, there’s no guarantee that it will work twice, but that’s how I walked away with a $95 pair of beautiful earrings and three hours worth of good fun, and that's not even mentioning the great food.

Wild About Bingo is at the Pelican Yacht Club, 1120 Seaway Dr., Fort Pierce, June 7 at 11:30 a.m. Reservations are required and the earlier the better. Your $40 ticket includes lunch and six Bingo games with dozens of really great prizes that have been donated by generous artists and businesses for this Backus fundraiser. There’s a $200 cash grand prize in addition to all the others.

It isn’t mandatory, but dressing up in a safari outfit or in a wild animal print is a cause for applause at Wild About Bingo. Note that this is not a ladies-only event.

Get more details at www.backusmuseum.com and call 772-465-0630 to make a reservation.

Luke Tessier, Drumming Scholarship Winner
Drummer Luke Tessier is the third in this series spotlighting the 2019 winners of the Treasure Coast Jazz Society’s scholarships. He came by his sense of rhythm naturally, growing up with parents who are dance instructors (owners of Swingsations 14th Avenue Dance Studio) and DJs (DJandDance Productions) in Vero Beach.

Tessier began his career as a drummer in elementary school, where he joined a drum club based on hand drums. Next it was a drum set at Melody Music, then lessons from Jeff Loforte, then the music program at Indian River Charter High School, and lessons from musicians David Mundy, David Heroux, Claudio Berardi, and Brandon Putzke. It’s always been about drums for Tessier. “I took percussion class (at IRCHS) at the same time but the drum set is where my heart is set.”
It wasn’t until he got to IRCHS that jazz got his attention. “I'd say it really stuck once I joined my high school band because that was when I was really taught and shown what jazz really was and how to play it — the background of jazz and what you can do with it.” So far, Tessier likes all forms of jazz. “It's fun to listen to how far you can stretch it and make it your own.” He said his inspiration comes from Buddy Rich, Steve Gad, and Dave Weckl. And when it isn’t jazz coming through his ear buds, it’s rock, punk, metal, funk, or jazz.

Tessier joins his 3Plus1 band members in taking advantage of jazz jams in the area. “There is one on Thursdays at the American Grill … and also the Fort Pierce Jazz Society has one … on Tuesdays at The Sunrise Theater.” In addition to 3Plus1, he plays with The 20th Street Jazz Band. His favorite kind of gig? One that pays.

Tessier is part of the IRCHS Wolves and said it’s fantastic. Jazz director Dave Mundy "is a great guy, helps you out when you need it even if it doesn't have to do with jazz. Plus he has a great knowledge of music and also always wants to learn.” The future definitely has music in it, the drummer said. “I love playing and writing music. I hope to make it big and tour the world while releasing music with my band.”
Graham Oberlink, Student Thespian
Graham Emerson Oberlink will be pursuing a degree in Theatre Performance at Florida Atlantic University in a few months, concentrating in musical theatre. His years at Indian River Charter High School have prepared him for the success he sees down the line. “In 10 years from now I hope to be (an) acting professional whether it be on camera or on the stage.”

Oberlink said he attends a “multitude of VAPA classes,” Visual and Performing Arts, at IRCHS. “Musical Theatre, Acting 3, Dance Techniques 2, and COMP (competition acting). Note that these are the VAPA classes I’m taking this year and does not include past years’ classes.”

The actor understands the importance of a well-rounded background as he moves toward his intended career. “My theatre experience backstage as well as on stage is one of the most important factors for a successful performance. Having the correct focus and support backstage is one of the reasons why IRCHS is so successful.” The award-winning technical theatre program guarantees a well-trained crew backstage, and that “makes a large impact on the mood of the show,” Oberlink said.

The shows he has been in at IRCHS range from Sean Sexton’s All That American Jazz to Wizard of Oz, he said, but he doesn’t care about the genre of a show. “When acting or putting on a show you do it for the art and being able to experience so many different stories and characters lives, and that is the true gift.” He looks to his director, Michael Naffziger, who “often says what draws him to acting is that a play is written about a pinnacle part in the character's life and how incredible it is that we get to experience that every time we act.”

Oberlink has been to the Florida Thespian Festival with IRCHS three times and said he’s been pleasantly surprised each time. With about 10,000 young theatre people coming together for a common goal, creating unity, “it truly is a beautiful thing.”
Late Bloomer Jay Madigan
A first look at Jay Madigan’s colored pencil drawings had me thinking I was looking at a series of illustrations for a children’s book. To date, that isn’t something Madigan has considered, but why not? Friends have suggested sending them to a company that would print them on t-shirts, scarves, throw pillows, and even purses.

Madigan said, “My style is not representational, and is mainly an exercise in color and shape. It is utterly meaningless; however I know when I like it and when it is done. And I then move on to my next creation.” He has a name for this series, “The Garden of Earthly Delights,” based on “16th Century works of the same title by Heronymus Bosch. I jokingly refer to myself as Anonymous Heronymus."
It’s been a while between spurts of art activity for Madigan, although he’s been doodling and drawing all his life. He said his interest began when he was in kindergarten and his drawing of a scene from a book about a Trojan horse wowed everybody who saw it. He was an art history major in college and took a few studio classes, but the emphasis was on art history.

Madigan is the first in an Arts Blast series on the older generation still active in the arts. He’s 84 years old and lives at Indian River Estates, where he discovered “a nice art room and a group of nice people doing art,” so he decided to give it a try. He chose colored pencils because they seemed the easiest and most convenient thing to work with, he said. “Watercolor seemed too difficult, and oils were too messy and took too long to dry, although I did my thesis on oil painting. Oils have always been the most attractive medium to me when it comes to appreciating art, and watercolor also is a medium I enjoy viewing.”
Other interests for Madigan include reading, classical music and opera, theater and movies, and he reads three newspapers every day. In a younger life, he played golf and tennis. With all of that, Madigan finds time two or three times a week to sit down with his pencils and paper and create.
