Construction Update

September 24, 2024

Upcoming Activities

Crews continue installing the overhead signs this week along with continuing electrical connection to the signs. All work will take place between 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. as follows:

  • Wednesday, September 25 – 3200 E 6200 S
  • This work will require the closure of the right eastbound lane and the acceleration lane leaving the commercial center.
  • Crews will remove this sign, make repairs, and replace the sign in this one night.

While crews are hanging the overhead sign, traffic will be required to stop until the signs are securely fastened. This stoppage could last 30 minutes or more. Police officers will be directing traffic during this time.

Through the end of September, crews will complete electrical connections, installation of warning signs and flashing lights, guardrail, and other final work items. This work may require right lane and/or shoulder closures.

Motorists should reduce speed and be prepared for sudden stopping traffic within the work zone.

Area residents can expect an increase in noise, dust, and vibration during this work.

These signs will help provide motorists with up-to-date information on canyon conditions, parking, and other information to reduce congestion in both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will install three overhead variable message signs (VMS) and three traction warning signs on roadways that lead to the Cottonwood Canyons. Once installed, these signs will provide up-to-date traffic conditions in both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon.

This information will assist motorists and visitors to the Cottonwood Canyons on the best location for parking and transit and ease traffic by providing early traffic information so motorists can make travelling decisions prior to entering the canyons.
