Construction Update

September 11, 2024

Upcoming Activities

Crews have resumed work and are currently preparing to install the overhead signs - which is scheduled for next week.

Starting Monday, September 16, crews will begin overnight work to install the overhead signs. All work will take place between 8:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. as follows:

  • Monday, September 16 – 3200 E 6200 S
  • This work will require the closure of the acceleration lane leaving Bandits and the right eastbound lane.
  • Traffic leaving Bandits will be required to stop and merge with the left eastbound lane.
  • Tuesday, September 17 – 7650 S Wasatch Blvd
  • This work will require the closure of the right southbound lane.
  • Wednesday, September 18 – 1770 E 9400 S
  • This work will require the closure of the right eastbound lane.

While crews are hanging the overhead sign, traffic will be required to stop until the signs are securely fastened. This stoppage could last 30 minutes or more. Police officers will be directing traffic during this time.

Through the end of September, crews will complete electrical connections, installation of warning signs and flashing lights, guardrail, and other final work items.

Continuing Activities

For the remainder of the week, crews continue trenching and placing conduit in and near the three work zones to supply power to the signs. During this work, travel lanes and shoulders may be closed.

Motorists should reduce speed and be prepared for sudden stopping traffic within the work zone.

Area residents can expect an increase in noise, dust, and vibration during this work.

Project Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) will install three overhead variable message signs (VMS) and three traction warning signs on roadways that lead to the Cottonwood Canyons. Once installed, these signs will provide up-to-date traffic conditions in both Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon.

This information will assist motorists and visitors to the Cottonwood Canyons on the best location for parking and transit and ease traffic by providing early traffic information so motorists can make travelling decisions prior to entering the canyons.
