Dear Parents,
As guardians, educators and role models to children in our lives, it is important that we are conscious of this fact: What we do and how we act have an impact in the ways our children think about themselves and the world. If we are always down about ourselves or make disparaging comments about ourselves to others, children will likely mimic that behavior. Peers in school along with the media and marketing put pressure on our children to look and act in a certain way. It is important to teach our children to love themselves and to be proud of who they are amidst so much pressure to be a certain way. Here are some tips on how to help your child feel confident and have a positive self-image.
● Stay connected with your child: Try to encourage your child’s interests and stay connected with him/her by talking regularly about interests or even just about the school day. By showing interest you can boost your child’s self-confidence and inspire them to feel positive about themselves.
● Encourage your child to be healthy and happy in their skin: Commit yourself to modeling good eating habits; this will encourage your child to eat healthier. Don’t talk about dieting or about negative feelings about your own body. Have positive conversations about body image and encourage your child to play outside to stay physically active. Or plan to take an afternoon or evening walk with your child.
Having confidence and having a positive self-image will help ease the transition from child to tween, to teenager, to adult. Cultivating confidence and inspiring self-image in children is not easy, but it will help your child become the best he or she can be.
Peace, Mrs. Sarpu

Weather Watch and Dressing for the Cold Weather
Winter is upon us and it’s important to properly dress for the conditions. Coats, hats and gloves/mittens are a must for students and adults to be outside especially when the temperatures dip below freezing. Remember that the wind-chill also affects the temperature. For example, although it maybe 20 degrees outside, if the wind speed is 10mph, it will feel like 9 degrees out! Not covering up exposed skin can lead to frostbite. Frostbite is an injury to the skin and the underlying layers of the skin that are exposed to temperatures below freezing. The most common areas at risk are the fingers, toes, nose, ears, cheeks and chin.
There are three different stages of frost bite:
1. Frost nip. A mild form of frost bite that causes the skin to pale or turn red and the skin will feel very cold. If the skin continues to be exposed, if will begin to feel prickly and numb. When the skin is warmed, it may be painful. During this stage the skin is not permanently damaged.
2. Superficial frostbite. The skin appears red and turns white or pale. If you warm up the skin during this stage, the surface of the skin can turn blue or purple. Sensations such as stinging, burning and swelling can occur during the rewarming of the skin. Even some blisters can form during this stage.
3. Severe (deep)frostbite. As frostbite progresses, it affects all layers of the skin. Numbness, loss of all sensations to the cold and pain usually occur. Large blisters form 24 to 48 hours after rewarming and these blisters then turn black and hard resulting in tissue death.
Wearing layers allows us to adjust to varying temperatures when going from the outdoors to inside and will help to keep us comfortable all day long. So protect yourself and your family by covering up any bare skin during the cold temperatures!

Dear Parents/ Guardians;
If you or your child are showing signs of COVID and go for Rapid COVID testing and/ or a Rapid PCR and it comes back negative, you must do a confirmatory PCR test as a backup. Current guidelines state that a person is presumed positive if showing signs of COVID and must be isolated from others until a regular PCR test is done for back up confirmation. The best thing to do is to notify your Physician and proper follow through can occur that keeps you and others safe. That way if the test is negative the Physician can rule out other causes.
Per Dr. Patel and Abbott laboratories:
Negative results should be treated as presumptive and, if inconsistent with clinical signs and symptoms or necessary for patient management, should be tested with different authorized or cleared molecular tests. Negative results do not preclude SARS-CoV-2 infection and should not be used as the sole basis for patient management decisions. Negative results should be considered in the context of a patient’s recent exposure history and the presence of clinical signs and symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
So my suggestion is that you notify your MD if you are experiencing symptoms and have a back up done just to be on the safe side and prevent the spread of infection to others. If you have been exposed to a person that has tested positive the best time to get tested is on day 5 to ensure adequate viral load is present.

It is imperative that everyone follow new or updated Health Guidelines that are written in the Monday Memo every Monday. We are doing everything we can to keep the School open and safe for all but we need everyone to be informed as things are changing weekly. Please refer to Travel restrictions under ct.gov/coronavirus if you plan to travel to other States in the coming weeks for updated restrictions. Anyone that travels to a red zone State must quarantine for 10 days or obtain a PCR COVID test prior to return to School.
A rapid test will not be accepted.
