Cougar Chronicle March 2021
Dear Parents,

On March 19 we celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph! Pope Francis proclaimed 2021 “A Year of Saint Joseph”. Saint Joseph was an ordinary person with extraordinary graces. The foster father of the Son of God, Pope Francis says, was “a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an accepting father, a father who is creatively courageous, a working father . . . a father in the shadows.” Saint Joseph is a model for every father and every Catholic as the head of the Holy Family, the husband of the Mother of God, and the foster-father of the Son of God.

Pope Francis wrote in his Apostolic Letter his personal reflection on Saint Joseph against the backdrop of the pandemic.  “We experienced, amid the crisis, how our lives are woven together and sustained by ordinary people, people often overlooked.” “People who do not appear in newspaper and magazine headlines, or on the latest television show, yet in these very days are surely shaping the decisive events of our history,” the Pope writes. “Doctors, nurses, storekeepers and supermarket workers, cleaning personnel, caregivers, transport workers, men and women working to provide essential services and public safety, volunteers, priests, men and women religious, and so very many others. They understood that no one is saved alone.” “… How many are praying, making sacrifices, interceding for the good of all.” At the conclusion of his Letter, he offered A Prayer to Saint Joseph, which he encourages all of us to pray together:

Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.

To celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph, we will conclude our school day by praying together the Prayer to Saint Joseph.

Thank you for your continued support. Your children are true gifts from God!

Peace,
Mrs. Ann T. Sarpu

A FRIENDLY REMINDER
Drop Off Procedures
If you are using Cotwell Street for drop off, we ask that you have your children ready to exit the vehicle when you pull up. Cars are backing up down the street and creating traffic issues. Please make sure students have their backpacks and any other items they may need readily available. If the students need more time, it's probably better if you park in front of the school and walk up with them. If you are using the drop off lane, please pull up as far as possible before dropping off and make sure the students exit the car on the curbside only. Traffic is ONE WAY ONLY. Please DO NOT make a U-TURN in the drop off area. As always, the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. If you have any questions, please call the School Office

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Over the next few weeks, I will be performing vision screenings on your child if they are in Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 3-5 inclusive. If time permits, I will also screen the Preschoolers as this can identify a potential problem a lot sooner. Children do not need to worry, the exam is quick and painless and consists of a small digital camera that quickly measures pupil size, alignment, focus, power equality, and difficulty with near or far vision. This is similar to those that have been performed by the Lion’s Club and I will use the same Spot Vision screener by Welch Allyn. This camera is more sophisticated than a simple Snellen Eye Chart that measures distance only and although it cannot diagnose, it can identify potential issues with vision that may have changed since your child’s last vision screening. Should a problem be found, you will be contacted with a letter for referral to have further testing and diagnosis by an eye doctor or optician.

If your child wears glasses, your child will be tested with glasses off and then on, so please make sure your child remembers to wear them to school.

If you decide to opt out of the screening, please provide a written note as well as a documented vision exam done by your child’s doctor or eye physician that has occurred within the past year. Screenings are mandated by the Department of Education as any deficit can affect your child’s ability to learn.

If your child is a Remote Learner and wishes to participate, please contact me at [email protected] as soon as possible and I can set up an appointment for your child.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
