LACCD Trustees Eliminate Colleges Debt, Including At LASC
As part of an effort to strengthen the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and its colleges, LACCD's Board of Trustees on July 8 approved a resolution that updated the district's fiscal accountability measures and terminated its Debt Repayment Policy. The vote is especially beneficial for LASC as it included the wiping out of the college's more than $14 million in debt that has piled up over the past 10 years. 
LASC Offering Remote Instruction And Business Operations
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, LASC is physically closed to the public, but  classes will be offered through the Fall Semester in a remote learning (online) model using Canvas and all student services and business operations will be available remotely. LASC Football And Basketball Seasons Delayed Until Spring
The California Community College Athletic Association Board of Directors has approved the implementation of a contingency plan that would provide a return to intercollegiate athletics for the 2020-21 academic year that shifts all sports, including football, to the spring season. At this time, you can plan to see LASC's football as well as men's and women's basketball teams play again this spring.

LASC's 2020-21 Student Government Executive Board Sworn Into Office
LASC's Associated Students Organization held its virtual swearing-in ceremony for its new 2020-21 executive board in July. The board consists of Teissy Angel Ramirez, President; Kenneth Sanchez, Executive Vice President; Javiyan Jones, Administrative Vice President; Michelle Booker, Secretary; Humzah Farrukh, Treasurer; and Selena Lopez, Chief Justice.  
Earn A Transfer Degree In Business Administration Or Child Development In Two Years
Starting in the upcoming Fall Semester, students can complete a degree with a transfer guarantee in two years in Business Administration (AS-T) and Early Childhood Education (AS-T). The July 2020 edition of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges' Rostrum includes an article written by LASC's Arts and Humanities Department Chair Katrina Taylor titled "Gitcho' Mind Right: Why Confronting Unconscious Bias Must Become an Actionable Item." The publication also includes writings from several LACCD faculty members.

Dream Resource Center Provides Wealth Of Resources After DACA Decision
The Trump administration announced in July it will continue to reject initial Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) applications from immigrants who never obtained the protection from deportation and also limit the renewals for more than 640,000 Dreamers enrolled in the program. LASC's Dream Resource Center is united in its commitment to our undocumented students and employees. The center has also gathered a wealth of resources to access in this effort.

LASC's  Career Pathways and Job Center  will have a  Mock Interview Workshop  from 10:30 a.m. to noon August 12. Register to learn strategies for a successful job interview. Health Center Staff Available To Support All Students
All of the providers and staff at LASC's  Student Health Center , which is operated by Mosaic Family Care, are committed to supporting the health needs of all students. The on-campus center is closed, but students can still receive support from the Mosaic Family Care office.

LACCD has released its "Framework for Racial Equity and Social Justice" document. The plan speaks to the values of LACCD and directs specific action steps and commitments that will allow its colleges and the district to actively build anti-racist organizational capacity and resilience and move toward a more socially and racially-just academic community.
LACCD Update: Trustees Take Bold Step To Protect Climate

LACCD Update: District Partners With LAHSA To Address Student Housing
LACCD and LASC are now working with the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority (LAHSA) to help students with housing issues. The Campus Peer Navigator Program aims to connect students who are experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness with resources that can end their housing crisis.

State Update: Board Of Governors Supports Proposition 16
The California Community Colleges Board of Governors has unanimously endorsed a resolution urging voters to support Proposition 16, which would repeal Proposition 209, the 1996 measure that banned consideration of race, sex, color, ethnicity and national origin in California public employment, education and contracting.
