With fall now upon us, I am delighted by the positive things our Cougars have experienced in only our first month of school!

There’s been vigorous learning in our classrooms with relationship forming between our students and teachers. How exciting to watch Lower and Middle School buddies get to know each other through purposeful activity and time together. Field trips are happening again with new and returning excursions setting the stage for learning beyond our walls and for community and connection-building. IB students recently headed to Annapolis to learn about the Chesapeake Bay Foundation; 5th graders seined local waters and learned about terrapin turtle habitats; Upper School students enjoyed meaningful time at Farming for Hunger; and Middle School students took to Colonial Williamsburg and will soon head to the Eastern Shore for overnight learning experiences and group-building.

These shared experiences speak to Calverton’s broader educational mission, and moreover, each experience is an opportunity for students to step beyond their comfort zones, to take a healthy risk, and to learn about themselves and others. We are proud that as a small community, we can provide big opportunities for learning and growth!

As community-building and connection are a focus this year for our students, we also deeply value our engagement with you. You’ll discover many upcoming events featured in this month’s Cougar Connection in which we invite you to take part.

On October 13th at 8:30 am, we will host our monthly Coffee & Conversation in the Lower School Courtyard. Following some mingling, Danielle Lico, our Board of Trustees President, and I will facilitate dialogue about progress being achieved on our 2019-24 Strategic Plan as well as efforts this year to review Calverton’s mission and core values and how you can play a role. Please join us to learn more, to share input, and to ask any questions on your mind!

We are so grateful to all of you for your support in this most important work of educating and caring for your children.

In partnership and education,

Jamey Hein

Head of School
