A MESSAGE FROM the Executive Director

Dear CSU Alumni Family,

This spring, more than 400 graduates joined our growing alumni community as the Class of 2025 and proudly walked across the stage. With their achievements, our alumni network now spans over 40,000 strong—across all 50 states and 28 countries worldwide.

Congratulations to the Class of 2025!

As we close another successful fiscal year, I want to thank you—our alumni—for the incredible support you’ve shown. You've helped spark new partnerships, introduced us to new funders, and created new ways for alumni to stay connected.

From launching scholarship funds and dedicating memorial benches on campus, to showing up at events and advocating for CSU in Springfield, your Cougar pride has been the foundation of our momentum. It’s that continued engagement that fuels what’s next.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to launch a peer mentoring program this fall, host events to celebrate and connect alumni, and share even more alumni stories across our growing network. Watch for more later this summer and fall as these plans begin to take shape.

Whether it's by joining the alumni association, signing up to volunteer, attending upcoming alumni events, or by exploring our expanding alumni benefits, we invite you to take part in this exciting new chapter.

Let's never forget that we are always stronger, together.

With Appreciation,

Melanie Sillas Signature

Cunningham Memorial Bench and Scholarship

Pictured on Dr. Cunningham's memorial bench are her daughter Michelle, son Brian, and her sister DeLois.

Brenda Lacey Cunningham '82, '03 was a passionate and caring educator who began a lifelong journey of learning at Chicago State University that spanned decades. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education in 1982, and then her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Administration in 2003. She was working her doctoral degree in education when she passed away in 2023.

She began her career teaching at St. Margaret of Scotland School in the city’s Morgan Park neighborhood, and went on to wonderfully impact the lives of thousands of students over the years since; a feat celebrated by the Golden Apple Foundation which named her a finalist in 2006. After serving over thirty years in education, Mrs. Cunningham retired as a principal with Chicago Public Schools in 2014.

At CSU's recent 2025 Commencement Ceremony, Mrs. Cunningham was posthumously honored with a Doctorate Degree in Education, officially making her Dr. Brenda Lacey Cunningham '82, '03, '25.

In commemoration of Dr. Cunningham's 70th birthday and to honor her legacy of service and passion for learning, her family dedicated a bench outside of the College of Education building on campus, and established a memorial scholarship in her name to support current and future CSU students who seek degrees in education.
