This week's newsletter is long and very full of upcoming events and great information. It's that time of year!  School is in full swing!
Thanks for taking the time to read carefully.
A FEW REMINDERS

Please do not bring your dogs on a leash to arrival and dismissal.  We have children who are allergic and who are afraid of animals. It is not safe to have even the most docile dog around as many children as we have out and about at arrival and dismissal.  Please help us keep every student safe.

Parents are welcome to join your students for lunch at their regular lunch time.  Please follow these guidelines when you come for lunch:
1. Arrive on time so your child is not anxiously waiting to see if you are coming.
2. Check in, get an ID Badge and wear it in a visible spot so those on duty can see it.
3. Sit at the visitor table, not out in the front foyer.
4. Remember that your child can't ask a friend to sit with them at the visitor table.

HCE Accountability Standard

HCE - Met Standard

Index 1 - Student Achievement
Index 2 - Student Progress
Index 3 - Closing Performance Gaps
Index 4 - Post Secondary Readiness

We met standards on all 4 indices.  In 2016, to receive a Met Standard or Met Alternative Standard rating, districts and campuses must meet targets on three indexes: Index 1 or Index 2 and Index 3 and  Index 4.

HB5 CaSE - Recognized
The Community and Student Engagement (CaSE) rating is an opportunity for districts to showcase areas of success and excellence that are valued in the community. The statute requires each district to evaluate and designate a performance rating based on criteria set by a local committee. Each district and each campus is assigned a rating of exemplary, recognized, acceptable, or unacceptable. The district and campus performance ratings are reported annually to the Texas Education Agency.

The nine factors that are evaluated, along with the HCE rating are listed below:
  1. Fine arts - Exemplary
  2. Wellness and physical education - Exemplary
  3. Community and parental involvement - Exemplary
  4. 21st century workforce development program - Exemplary
  5. 2nd language acquisition program - Recognized
  6. Digital learning environment - Recognized
  7. Dropout prevention strategies - Exemplary
  8. Educational programs for GT students - Exemplary
  9. Compliance with statutory reporting and policy requirements. Yes (for indicator 9 the rating is either Yes or No)
OVERALL RATING FOR HCE - RECOGNIZED
Our Campus Improvement Plan addresses the Factors that will bring us up to Exemplary for next school year.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

Every day I see students from each grade, either in the cafeteria, in their classroom, my office, or passing in the hallways.  It always puts a smile on my face when a student initiates "Good morning, Mrs. Chvatal" or holds the door open for me as I go.  I usually pr aise a child when he or she shows good manners and I must remember my own manners around children.

Manners are essential for so many adult opportunities such as dating relationships, job interviews, internships, and getting along with roommates and coworkers.  As Stephen R. Covey says in his 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, we must "begin with the end in mind".

For parents, I see this as being intentional about how we are modeling adulthood for our children, as well as shaping them into the successful adults they will become one day.  Will they become an adult who knows how to greet people of different cultures, helps clean up after a big meeting, writes thank-you notes for gifts (or after an interview) and can figure out a way to get along with the annoying roommate by doing more than their share of the housekeeping?

What can parents do now to teach children proper behavior in different settings?  Love and Logic shares their perspective: click here for the article

TEACHER WORKROOM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The PTA is looking for interested volunteers to help out in the Teacher Workroom.  Ideally, each volunteer will work once a month in the workroom making copies, cutting, pasting and laminating for our HCE teachers.   Most likely the commitment is not longer than a couple of hours a month.

The time spent in the workroom helps our faculty and staff so much and allows them to spend more time focused on the classroom.  Please contact Kelly Siblik at  kelly.siblik@gmail.com  to volunteer today.  Thanks in advance!
