Grand Knight's Report

Dear Brother Knights,

Here is the report for August 2024. It was a relatively quiet month compared to other months but here are some of the highlights. On Sunday, August 4th we had our Sunday breakfast and it benefitted the Preschool Scholarship Program. Sue Balcom, the SJN Preschool Program Director, was very appreciative of the money that we raised.

On Monday, August 12th, we held our membership meeting. BK Steve Brischler brought some homemade Brunswick stew and cornbread that we all enjoyed. This was the second meeting of the Fraternal Year and there were still no tabled or passed motions. This might change due to the relocating of the old refrigerator and freezer to the Feaster Center and the additional work that had to be done on the building’s AC so the units will work properly. During the last meeting a Brother Knight reminded us that we are a Catholic Men’s Organization and we should make more of an effort to pray the Rosary before the meeting and attend the Monthly Knight’s Mass. I’m proud to say that we had more BKs attend the Knight’s Mass and more BKs participate in the Rosary Service. Great job Brother Knights. Let’s keep it up.

Looking ahead, the next breakfast will be on Sunday, September 8th, and it will benefit the Special Needs Ministry. Then on Saturday, September 21st, St. John Neumann will be hosting their annual Parish Festival. I hope to see a lot of Brother Knights there helping or enjoying themselves with their families. Finally, volunteering is shown to be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling activities a person can undertake. There are studies to support this as well. One BK confided with me and told me how much he and his wife enjoy volunteering and how it made their lives better. If you are a Brother Knight heed those words and consider volunteering. I believe that’s why many of you joined the Knights of Columbus in the first place. There is at least one opportunity every month to volunteer with the Knights and that’s our monthly breakfast. Volunteering at the Family Breakfast is a great way to volunteer since all the money that is raised goes to the designated ministry and it helps out the SJN Parish Community tremendously. Therefore, I encourage you to answer the call to volunteer when I send out an email or send a calling post message.

May God Bless you All!

That concludes my report.

Vivat Iesu,

GK Brian Jeffers

Lecturer's Report

Today's Meditation

"With regard to evil thoughts, there may be a twofold delusion. God-fearing souls who have little or no gift of discernment, and are inclined to scruples, think that every wicked thought that enters their mind is a sin. This is a mistake, for it is not the wicked thoughts in themselves that are sins, but the yielding or consenting to them. The wickedness of mortal sin consists in the perverse will that deliberately yields to sin with a complete knowledge of its wickedness with full consent. And therefore St. Augustine teaches that when the consent of the will is absent, there is no sin. However much we may be tormented by temptations, the rebellion of the senses, or the inordinate motions of the inferior part of the soul, as long as there is no consent, there is no sin. For the comfort of such anxious souls, let me suggest a good rule of conduct that is taught by all masters in the spiritual life. If a person who fears God and hates sin doubts whether or not he has consented to an evil thought or not, he is not bound to confess it, because it is morally certain that he has not given consent. For had he actually committed a mortal sin, he would have no doubt about it, as mortal sin is such a monster in the eyes of one who fears God that its entrance into the heart could not take place without its being known. Others, on the contrary, whose conscience is lax and not well-informed, think that evil thoughts and desires, though consented to, are not sins provided they are not followed by sinful actions. This error is worse than the one mentioned above. What we may not do, we may not desire. Therefore an evil thought or desire to which we consent comprises in itself all the wickedness of an evil deed." —St. Alphonsus Liguori, p. 142-143
