Volume 7 | February 2018
Grand Knight’s Report
Worthy Brother Knights:

We are so blessed that February is a busy month for our council.  We have our Family Breakfast, work at the Visitation Monastery, Degree exemplifications, Neumann Center improvements, Fraternal recruitment, Youth programs, Parish projects and helping our fellow Knights in need, all in the month of February.

Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent, is on the same day as Valentine's Day this year. Don't forget to get your spouse something special on this day.

With Lent, we start our most visible events of the year, Fish Fry dinners. When you talk to most church members, this is the event they associate the most with our council. This is our time to shine.

The Lenten Season is an excellent time to offer time to serve the Lord and perform Works Of Mercy. Please prayerfully consider volunteering at any of the events this month. We can use your help and I am sure you will enjoy yourself while giving time for charity.
Lastly, we are at half time in our Fraternal year and it is time to take a look at where we are with our objectives: Star Council, Building our Domestic Church, Columbian Objectives, Charity Work and Degree Exemplifications. We will share our progress at the upcoming business meeting on February 12th. Come to the Neumann Center to hear about our status and stay for some social time where we enjoy food and fellowship.

Thank you to all who has sent your dues this year. This helps us meet our expenses and enables us to be more charitable. The $48 a year for dues is only $4 a month commitment, but when added together, it equates to thousands that helps us achieve our objectives.

May God continue to Bless you and your families.

pax vobiscum,

Mark

  • Ken: needs 4 for cleanup that he still needs help with
  • Still needs a co-chair to ask people how they’re doing
  • Needs a truck to move the new grill down there. Steve can help move the grill. Last year we had ~15 steaks at a time on it.
  • BK Todd Eaton said there is an issue with the free throw contest. The league has games on the normal day and we’ve been switched to 5 PM this Saturday, right before the steak dinner. Offering a free kids meal if the kid shoots for the steak night. We need 4 brother knights to help.
Good of the Order
In last month's business meeting, the following items were included in the Good of the Order:

  • BK James (Randy) Merritt won the 50/50 drawing.
  • Fr. Christopher Monturo was selected for the attendance raffle and was not present. The prize will roll-over to $75.
  Recognizing Knights
GK Mark Davis Recognized the following Knights:

  • The Knight of the Month was awarded to BK David Werve.
  • Family of the Month was awarded to BK Benjamin McCormack family.
Unfinished Business from Last Business Meeting
  • BK Larry Hoffman: There was a committee to recommend what to do with the money from the GKC.
  • Because of the cash in possession of the council, no need to put money into cash
  • 10% - 3 mo CD, to be rolled into 6mo CD at maturation
  • 10% - 6mo CD, to be rolled into 6mo CD at maturation
  • 40% - Mutual funds designed to be 1-3 year investments, at approx. 4-6% return. We’re working with an advisor. Designed to have security, but will have stocks in it.
  • 40% - Fund with stocks that mimic the S&P 500.
  • We will dollar cost average our investment over the course of 6 months (this means that instead of putting the money in all at once, we’ll put it in over time).
  • Motion, 2nded
  • Discussion
  • Can we invest in the KofC insurance fund?
  • No, we don’t meet the minimum
  • Fees
  • S&P 500? Basically, no
  • Other investments, est. ~1% fee
  • What organization? Has it been checked and compared to other organizations?
  • Ameriprise
  • There are being no funds charged to service the account, only for the load associated with the mutual funds if we put money into a managed fund.
  • Motion carries with no opposition
  • A motion was made to continue finance committee to understand how to invest the money in funds over time
  • Passes
  • PGK Bruce Rago : Can we have an update on a move of the homeless shelter?
  • BK Todd Eaton said he and BK Randy Merritt are on the pastoral council. They’ve asked the council and Fr. Sunny about what will happen to St. Vincent de Paul. It’s been brought up to Leo Payne, who leads SvP, who will talk to Fr. Sunny. Hoping for a timely conversation to lead into the end-of-month pastoral council meeting.
  • SvP has an interest to use this space as a homeless shelter
  • If this space cannot be used as a homeless shelter, it could become available to other groups.
  • When the inquiry was made to Gwinnett County to put a homeless shelter here, the County explained that we’re not zoned for it and would have to get re-zoned for it
  • Fr. Sunny understands that the KofC and Boy Scouts are the primary users of this space
  • PGK Bruce Rago : The GKC has not been dissolved. All 3 officers have requested that they be removed.
  • GK Mark Davis says that will be okay
  • BK Larry Hoffman will do the paperwork with the secretary of the state and find officers
  • PGK Bruce Rago: Name tags for past Grand Knights
  • GK Mark Davis said PGK Jim McHugh said they were ordered but he is not here to give an update.

New Business from Last Business Meeting
  • Sisters of the Visitation on Rigdedale Dr. would like to clean up their basement and have asked for help. ON 1st Saturday of February at 9 AM, we’d like to have Knights there to haul stuff out of the basement and throw it in the dumpster. Steve estimates 3 hours
  • Address: 2055 Ridgedale Dr, Snellville
  • Mass is at 8 AM if folks want to come early, usually about 30-45 minutes long.
  • When we have a special Knight’s event, the week prior, an email should be sent out to remind Knights about the upcoming event.
  • Fish fry is coming up: need captains for every position. Lent starts early this year. We may not be able to get the freezer over there because of the weather. We need about 3-4 days where the avg temp is not below 50ºF.
  • We have 6 fish frys
  • March 16 is the fish fry and March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day.
  • We need all hands on deck. BK Ken Fehner will make an online form.
  • We don’t have the space to expand our menu. It’s less about the cost of the menu items and is more about the lack of space in the kitchen.
  • The fryer that’s been used for hush puppies is down. It’s got black grease and needs to be fixed.
  • BK Ed Dantzer fixed it by adding a knob.
  • Someone needs to check fish frying equipment
  • Has prep time been scheduled with the church?
  • Not yet—we need to check with Carmen.
  • Who’s doing the ads for it?
  • Bk Frank Swider said we’re doing away with the 3 shrimp samplers. However, a coupon will give you $1 off per ticket (not meal, ticket)
  • Price of fish has gone up $.35/lb and shrimp is up $.25/lb

Joke of the Month

Two Jesuit novices both wanted a cigarette while they prayed. They decided to ask their superior for permission.

The first asked but was told no. A little while later he spotted his friend smoking and praying.

"Why did the superior allow you to smoke and not me?" he asked. His friend replied,

"Because you asked if you could smoke while you prayed, and I asked if I could pray while I smoked!"
