Council Courier

March-April 2024

A Special Publication for PCAIN Chartered Council Members

While the weather may be playing tricks on us, it is not yet April in Indiana. However, for those of us in the world of primary child abuse prevention, it can be easy to look past the month of March as National Child Abuse Prevention Month looms large. It occurred to me today, as I am considering information to share in this edition of the Council Courier, we must look at each month in front of us as THE Most Important Opportunity to share the message of child abuse prevention. We never know where and when the seeds of hope may land, take root, and prevent another family from having to experience the pain of child abuse or neglect. Therefore, please plan for April with all your heart but don’t forget to seize the chances available in March to communicate something along the lines of the following:

  • Use opportunities to invite people to join/participate with your local child abuse prevention council, which engages in child abuse prevention efforts year-round.
  • Highlight activities engaged in by your local council at other times of the year.
  • True primary child abuse prevention takes place “upstream,” through efforts such as building community protective factors and positive childhood experiences.
  • Reach out to neighboring counties who may not have a chartered child abuse prevention council and invite them to the April activities of your council. Offer to mentor them in the process of becoming a chartered council. See the link here to see which Indiana counties still need a chartered child abuse prevention council.
  • Please let us know if you have other great ideas, which we would love to share with your colleagues across Indiana.

Like the proverbial “pink elephant in the room,” there is no denying the importance of the month of April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The child abuse prevention community looks forward to this unfettered platform to discuss our important work all month long.

The month of April is very busy with prevention awareness activities in all shapes and sizes going on around the state. Take this opportunity to support fellow preventionists throughout Indiana by visiting and supporting their events.

  • PCAIN April Kickoff Event - April 1st – AM -- More specific details to come-check the Calendar of Events often.
  • Marion County Prevention Partners Kickoff - April 1st – Late AM – Early PM -- More details to come-check the Calendar of Events often.
  • PCAIN Matt Breman 5K Walk/Run on April 20th - Link to the Flyer and Link to details and registration.
  • Please consider sharing this event flyer with community and school running clubs, who may be interested in participating in this worthwhile event.
  • PCAIN covets participation by local child abuse prevention councils to have interactive/youth focused activity tables as part of this event. Please contact Kathy King to express your interest. There is no cost for this collaboration opportunity.
  • Link to Calendar of Events on the PCAIN Website that include the Council Events that have been shared with us.

Top four reasons to share April events with PCAIN:

  1. We can share and help promote these events on the PCAIN calendar. Email your event flyers to kking.pcain@villages.org.
  2. We identify events for PCAIN staff to visit and support.
  3. Opportunity to support your neighbors and fellow child abuse prevention colleagues across our state.
  4. Send us pictures of your pinwheel gardens and events so PCAIN can create a video montage to promote the collective impact of our incredible network of councils throughout April.  (You must have parental permission to share pictures of children.)
  5. When you create your event flyers, please be sure to include your Council's Logo.

The quarterly PCAIN Statewide Council meeting occurred on February 29th. If you missed it, the meeting was recorded and is available on our website, which you can access with the link HERE

Highlights from our time together include the following:

  • A plethora of local child abuse prevention month activities shared by council leaders from across Indiana.
  • PCAIN is asking for assistance from council leaders with the following:
  • PCAIN Council Leadership Cadre: Volunteers for this group will meet monthly with PCAIN leadership for approximately six months, to help revamp the council chartering process into something more sustainable and user friendly, along with revising how PCAIN supports and interacts with chartered child abuse prevention councils.
  • PCAIN Legislative Advocacy Sub-committee: Volunteers will breathe life into resources to help local council leaders engage with legislation. Not everyone is inclined towards this work but there is an undeniable link between legislation and child abuse prevention. This group will help to create materials to better understand the legislative process, create tracking reports and updates to follow proposed legislation, identify and engage local legislators, remain informed about newly passed laws, among other things. PCAIN has a Ph.D. intern who is helping to coordinate this work.
  • PCAIN Advisory Committee: PCAIN is seeking one council leader to volunteer to participate as part of the PCAIN Advisory Committee. This is the leadership group, which helps guide the work of PCAIN to remain focused, impactful, and relevant to the changing times. The group is represented by a multi-disciplinary group and wants to include the voice of local child abuse prevention councils. There will be a minimum of quarterly meetings with active participation expected.

Note: Please e-mail Jeff Wittman (jwittman.pcain@villages.org) or Kathy King (kking.pcain@villages.org) with interest in participating on any of the opportunities above.
