Patriot Day 25th Anniversary

Mayor Lopez proclaimed September 11, 2026, as Patriot Day in the City of Lee’s Summit, recognizing the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. On this day, we remember the 2,977 innocent lives lost, honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders and volunteers who answered the call, and keep in our thoughts the families and loved ones forever impacted by that day.

Next Steps: Mayor's Housing Task Force

City Council received a presentation on the proposed Mayor’s Housing Task Force, which would bring together elected officials, Planning Commission members and community representatives to examine housing issues and opportunities in Lee’s Summit.

The proposed 12-member task force would focus on three key areas: housing supply and choice, housing affordability and attainability, and housing production. The group is expected to meet about six to seven times starting in October and will develop recommendations for City Council's future consideration.

The proposed appointment process calls for each Councilmember to appoint one community member who resides within their district. Nominations are due to the Mayor by September 15, with a resolution formally establishing the Task Force and its membership expected to be considered by City Council on September 22.

Economic Development Policy Update

City Council received a presentation outlining a proposed 12-month process for reviewing and updating the City’s economic development policy framework. The process would combine technical expertise, stakeholder input and community perspectives while maintaining City Council’s final decision-making authority.

The proposed framework includes monthly Stakeholder Working Group meetings, six Community Advisory Board meetings and ongoing oversight from the Community Economic Development Committee (CEDC). The work would focus on evaluating current policies, benchmarking peer communities, gathering input, establishing priorities and developing updated policies, eligibility standards, fiscal safeguards and implementation tools.

Next steps include confirming the process structure and participants, appointing Advisory Board members and Working Group representatives, and beginning the review of current policies.
