Council District 7 Newsletter
August 24, 2018 - In This Issue:
Dear Friends and Neighbors

We had an exciting week with three celebrations in the district. First, I joined the Franklin McKinley School District to celebrate the grand opening of the new state of the art Franklin Elementary School. Some of the improvements include a new wireless internet access points, light fixtures upgrades, renovation of the multipurpose room, and a new administration building and kindergarten classroom. I am certain that these stunning improvements will have a profound impact on student's success and our families. Secondly, together with Councilmember Raul Peralez, Captain Heather Randall from our San Jose Police Department, staff from our Department of Transportation, and residents unveiled a new crosswalk at the corner of Alma and Sanborn Avenue which connects District 7 to District 3. This new crosswalk will help secure pedestrian safety and reduce speeding along Alma Avenue. Lastly, we cut the ribbon last night to celebrate the grand opening of William Lewis Manly Park. This park features ping pong and picnic tables, bocce courts, climbing wall, children's playground and lots more. I encourage you all to swing by and check out this new open space in the district. I would like to thank staff from our Parks Department for their hard work and our residents for joining me in this special day.

Finally, I will be hosting our 4th dumpster day event at Dahl Elementary School this Saturday, August 25. I am excited to continue my efforts to address illegal dumping in the district. As a reminder, if you have any large items (such as mattresses, sofas, refrigerators, tires), please schedule your FREE unlimited large item pick-ups. Thank you in advance for helping to keep San Jose clean and safe!

I f you have any questions, concerns or suggestions on how we can improve our community, feel free to contact me at  (408) 535-4907  or email me at  district7@sanjoseca.gov.

Sincerely,

Tam Nguyen

PLASTIC BREAKTHROUGH PILOT WITH BIOCELLECTION

San José, CA - GreenWaste Recovery, Inc. has partnered with the City of San José to support young pioneers striving for a solution for hard-to-recycle plastics.

BioCellection, a startup developing advanced technologies to transform difficult-to-recycle plastics, is led by Miranda Wang and Jeanny Yao. Their technology turns plastics into renewable chemicals that can be used to make paints and coatings, automotive parts, apparel, electronics, solvents and even fragrances. BioCellection targets plastics that are often landfilled because they are contaminated with organic material, recycling markets are limited or don't exist, or when mechanical sorting of certain post-consumer plastics isn't efficient or economical. CNN covered BioCellection's groundbreaking technology in March. Click here to watch the cover by CNN.
