Council District 7 Newsletter
January 29, 2018 - In This Issue:
Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you all had a great  weekend. I t was another busy week for the District 7 office.

Last weekend, we hosted the first clean-up of the year in District 7 at the Tully Ballfields with over 100 volunteers. With their help, we filled 137 bags of trash, removed mattresses, shopping carts, microwaves, styrofoam, and other large items. I want to thank all of our volunteers and organizers, Deb Kramer, with Keep Coyote Creek Beautiful, and Justin Imamura, with the Trash Punx, for giving their time and energy to keeping our district clean and vibrant.

With recent wide spread rumors of ICE raids in Northern California, a press conference was held at City Hall to inform the public about the Rapid Response Network Hotline. The Rapid Response Network (RRN) is a community defense project aimed to protect our immigrant families from deportation threats. The conference focused on educating our residents on the usage of the hotline and its benefits. To report any ICE raids and to receive help in real-time, please contact RRN at  (408) 290-1144.

On Monday, February 5th, please join me for a community meeting to discuss the future of Los Lagos Golf Course. The meeting will be held at the Los Lagos Golf Course, 2995 Tuers Road, 6pm-7:30pm. Come and share your thoughts and ideas on how we can preserve the course while exploring ways to reduce the cost of debt service. Also, this issue will be discussed at the February 6th City Council meeting at 1:30pm. Everyone is encouraged to attend and share their thoughts at the community or city council meeting. For more information, click here.

The City of San Jose State of the City Address  will be held on  Thursday, February 8th at 6pm, San Jose City College. Come out to hear Mayor Sam Liccardo outline key  initiatives, budget priorities, and opportunities for residents to get engaged to make San José a safer, smarter city. In addition to the Mayor's speech, the event will honor outstanding citizens from each Council District and exemplary city employees. For more information and to register, click here.

With TET and Lunar New Year coming up in the next month, I want to remind everyone that the usage of fireworks in San Jose is illegal. Illegal fireworks usage will result in hefty fines . Be safe, be responsible, and be mindful of the potential risks and hazards associated with illegal fireworks. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Finally, we will be having a neighborhood clean-up at the Seven Trees neighborhood on Saturday, February 3rd at 9am-11am.   We are looking for volunteers to come and join us to clean up the district. Register now.

I f you have any questions, concerns or suggestions on how we can improve our community, feel free to contact me at  (408) 535-4907  or email me at  district7@sanjoseca.gov.

Sincerely,

Tam Nguyen
Councilmember, District 7

WOMEN'S MARCH SAN JOSE
This past Saturday, January 20th, residents from all over the city came together in support of women's rights and civil liberties with numbers up to 20,000. It was truly one of the greatest turnouts. It is only though engagement and participation that we can achieve change. Thank you all for participating.
MEETING WITH RESIDENTS IN THE MONTEREY CORRIDOR
On Thursday, January 25, I met with some residents in the Monterey Corridor to talk about the homeless issues in the area. Unfortunately, the incidents are taking place on Caltrans and/or County property, so we will be arranging follow up meetings with both of those parties and inviting the residents to attend as well. If you have issues in your neighborhood, please don't hesitate to reach out and set up a meeting.
CITY NEWS UPDATE
RAPID RESPONSE NETWORK

The Rapid Response Network in Santa Clara County is a community defense project developed to protect immigrant families from deportation. They provide moral and accompaniment support during and after immigration operations in our community, and activate immigration attorneys when needed. The number is (408) 290-1144.

Briefly, these four things will happen when contacting the RRN:
  • Bilingual dispatchers (Eng/Spanish) will help the caller assert their rights over the phone. [For other languages, a third party interpreter service will be connected to the call.]
  • The Network dispatcher will send trained Rapid Responders to the impacted area. They will confirm if a raid is taking place and conduct legal observation of any ICE agents.
  • If someone was detained or is at risk of being detained, we activate immigration attorneys immediately.
  • The Network provides moral and family support to community members who have had a loved one detained by immigration.

ONE YEAR COMMEMORATION OF SAN JOSE FLOOD RESPONSE - STILL A NEED FOR HOUSING

As we approach the one-year commemoration of the Coyote Creek Flood, we want to thank all who provided assistance and housing to those individuals and families that were impacted by this unfortunate event.  It is with your help that we were successful in rehousing 210 households, but there is more work to do.  Currently, there are still 25 households that remain displaced by the flood and need new permanent housing.

If you have any apartments available for rent between the ranges of $1,500 to $2,700 a month, please contact Lindsey Caldwell at lcaldwell@catholiccharitiesscc.org.  Lindsey is working directly with the Coyote Creek flood survivors.

Your help makes a difference. Thank you for your partnership.
