Council District 9 News

June 6, 2022

IMG_2838_Facetune_01-06-2022-00-12-55.jpeg

Hello Lydia,

Foundational to the District 9 ideal of Opportunity for All is the belief that all people should have an opportunity to fulfill their potential in life. The only way that is possible is through the creation of a world where all people can be treated with dignity and respect while being their true selves.

As noted by Ben later in this email, the commemoration and celebration of National LGBTQ+ PRIDE Month is an opportunity to appreciate progress and recognize the work that remains ahead of us. Collectively and individually, we have much to do to ensure that our community is one where we all have the freedom to be our full selves.

With gratitude,

Sean

Welcome to the Team!

Naveed Haris | Pronouns: (she/her)

Policy Advisor and Community Representative

We are excited to welcome Naveed Haris to the team as a Policy Advisor and Community Representative. In her spare time, Naveed enjoys walking around the different neighborhoods of San Diego, museum hopping, farmers markets and restoring old furniture.

“What excites me most about the work I will be doing is seeing policy come to life and transforming from the written word to action that positively benefits so many. I am also very excited to be working with such a dynamic and diverse team who I can learn so much from.” - Naveed

Join us in welcoming Naveed to the District 9 Team!

Recognizing National Pride Month

In the month of June we commemorate and celebrate National LGBTQ+ PRIDE Month. It’s important to honor our LGBTQ+ history and remind ourselves the work for equality still persists. We are grateful for the countless Black and Brown Queer and Transgender Women who paved the way for the liberties many in our community celebrate today.

In the spirit of Pride, we must continue to push for the liberation of everyone in our communities. And that begins with recognizing the sanctity of life for those in our Black and Transgender community. Black Lives Matter. Trans Lives Matter. Black Trans Lives Matter.

Cannabis Equity Survey and Listening Sessions

Share your story with the City on Cannabis Equity!

The City of San Diego is hosting listening sessions to hear directly from individuals and communities disproportionately impacted by past drug enforcement policies and the War on Drugs. Your voice will help us develop a blueprint for a future equity program that provides fair pathways for all to enter the legal cannabis industry throughout the City.

The first District 9 listening session happened last week in Mountain View on June 2nd. The next, and final, D9 listening session is in City Heights on Thursday, June 16th, 5:30pm-7:00pm. This is taking place at the City Heights/Weingart Library and Performance Annex. Registration isn’t required but preferred. CLICK HERE TO RSVP.

You can also share your thoughts through survey that the City is hosting! You can complete this in English or Spanish.

Joint Cleanup with District 4

Through our series of organized cleanups in District 9, we continue our focus on beautifying our communities, helping the environment, and offering residents free and accessible opportunities to dispose of accumulated items. This month, we are joining forces with the Council District 4 Office! We are sponsoring a Joint Cleanup event on Saturday June 25th from 9:00-11:00am at the Willie Henderson Complex Sports Park parking lot, at 1035 South 45th Street, San Diego CA 92113. You’ll be able to dispose of items like mattress, electronics, tires, appliances, and plenty of room for other everyday items you want to get rid of.

Residents who are attending the cleanup event will not have access to the adjacent streets so we’re asking those participating to please use the South 43rd Street and Z Street entrance. This will facilitate easier traffic flow, make this event less intrusive to other residents in the area, and make unloading of vehicles more efficient. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Please contact our office if you want to volunteer for this (and future events) or if you have any questions.
