Hello Lydia,

Today marks the end of an incredibly busy and productive legislative period for the Council. Here is just a handful of what the Council has approved over the past couple of months:

• A budget that included the City's biggest ever investment in infrastructure and badly needed investments in housing and homelessness
• An updated Climate Action Plan that will improve local quality of life while ensuring San Diego does our part to address the global climate crisis
• A policy change that will ensure our district finally gets our fair share of City infrastructure investments
• The launch of a City internship program that will provide 1,000 San Diego youth with good paying public service opportunities
• Presenting voters an opportunity to approve expanded childcare options and a reform that will enhance City trash and recycling services
• Much, much, more...

Now, we are entering what is referred to as "legislative recess." Despite the label, this is anything but a break. No council meetings means more time to be out and about in the community. We'll be spending time with students, community based organizations, small business owners, and constituents from across District 9. The conversations I have with these folks will undoubtedly inspire me and motivate the work that'll occur once Council reconvenes in September. I look forward to reporting back throughout the month!

D9 Office Hours

The District 9 Office is now taking requests to meet with the Council President during our Office Hours. These are opportunities for D9 residents to speak directly with the Council President for a 15-minute one-on-one meeting, offered in-person or virtually (Zoom). 

Office Hours appointments are RSVP-ONLY. To be added to the interest list, please email your community representative (find yours here) with the following information:

Your Community Representative will then follow up on your submission and the Director of Office Administration will send an appointment to confirm the meeting the week of Office Hours.

Peoples Ordinance Moving to the Ballot

Exciting news! Last week, the City Council voted to place on the November 2022 ballot our proposed measure to amend the so-called People’s Ordinance. Should a majority of voters approve it, the measure would allow the City recover costs for the trash services it provides to residents, creating opportunities to offer services such as weekly recycling and replacement of curbside bins at no extra charge. 

Today, residents in most apartments and condominiums must pay private companies for trash services, while residents in most single-family homes receive trash services from the City at no upfront cost. Three San Diego County Grand Juries and the City’s Independent Budget Analyst have determined that the status quo is inequitable, fiscally irresponsible, and environmentally unsustainable. We are so excited for voters to weigh in on this important issue.

ESD’s Senior/ADA Program 

Did you know that the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department has an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Assisted Collection Service? This is a service for elders, those with mobility challenges, and/or anyone who does not have a person available to help set out their refuse and recycling containers. The ADA assistance can be temporary or permanent.
