Hello Lydia,

While we’re almost done with our first month of 2023, we want to take a moment to reflect back on some of the accomplishments of the past year as we ramp up for our celebration with community this Saturday at the State of the District.

2022 was an active and busy year for us all. Over 1000 constituent issues were worked on, 31 organizations were directly invested in by District 9, and there were 26 cleanups that removed over 300 tons of trash across our district. Millions of dollars were invested in our neighbors and we were able to deliver policy wins rooted in housing, clean and healthy communities, and safety and justice – for ALL.

You can learn more about all of these efforts, and our community’s achievements, in our 2022 Annual Report which is being released later this week! Limited physical copies will also be available at our State of the District.

February Office Hours

The District 9 Office is now taking requests to meet with Council President Elo-Rivera during our February Office Hours. These are opportunities for D9 residents to speak directly with the Council President for a 15-minute one-on-one meeting.

Office Hours will be held virtually on Friday, February 17th, 9am-12pm and appointments are required. To be added to the interest list, please email your Community Representative (find yours here) with the following information:

Your Community Representative will then follow up on your submission and the Director of Office Administration will send an appointment to confirm the meeting the week of Office Hours. We look forward to hearing from you!

City Budget Update

We’re still in the City’s Fiscal Year 2023 budget, but the Council District 9 team continues to work hard to ensure the City’s next budget reflects the many needs of our communities. On January 13th, we submitted updates to our budget priorities, which will inform the proposed budget that the mayor will present to City Council in April. You can read these new priorities here.

After receiving feedback from residents and organizations, our office included many projects, programs, and services within the following categories that would serve San Diego residents in Council District 9 and citywide, including:

Housing and homelessness
Youth Services
Public Safety
Climate Action
Mobility and Infrastructure
Equitable public services
Economic Development

Council President Elo-Rivera Elected SANDAG Vice-Chair

On Friday, January 13th the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) appointed Board of Supervisors Chair Nora Vargas as President and Council President Elo-Rivera as Vice Chair of the region’s largest transportation agency. Solana Beach Mayor Lisa Heebner was also elected to serve as 2nd Vice Chair.

SANDAG plays a pivotal role in our region’s economic development, sustainability, housing, and equity for residents, and Council President is dedicated to helping the board find the best path forward for the San Diego region.

The SANDAG board is made up of elected mayors, councilmembers, and county supervisors who are appointed from each of the region’s 19 local governments.

Corridor Community Cleanup

The Council District 9 Office in collaboration with the Corridor Neighborhood Association, hosted a community cleanup of the Corridor neighborhood on Saturday, January 21st. The group convened at Teralta Park on Saturday morning and then headed out into different parts of the community. At the conclusion of the cleanup, the group had disposed of over 200 pounds of trash and debris!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who showed up to the cleanup and for their dedication to improving our community. A special thanks to Linda Pennington, the Azalea Park Neighborhood Association, and James Lively for providing the volunteers with cleanup materials.

City Organic Waste Recycling Program

The City of San Diego has started their phased rollout of the new Organic Waste Recycling Program. As part of the program, new green bins and kitchen pails will be delivered to City-serviced residents. Around 15,000 bins will be delivered each week over the course of the next several months.
