Hello Lydia,

As we’ve mentioned in previous emails, we’re deep into our budget review process. Beyond simply looking at revenue and expenses, the process presents a unique opportunity to do a department-by-department comprehensive look at the many, many types of city work being done. It’s a long and impressive list. However, too often overlooked during budget talks and our day-to-day lives are the people who make everything happen – our city employees. Sadly, when not being overlooked, those folks who make the City run have been scapegoated as the cause of problems that are often beyond their control. 

Last week, in recognition of International Worker’s Day, I penned a commentary where I shared my hope for San Diego to officially end the chapter of villainizing city employees and begin writing one where we, as a community, honor and respect their work. National Small Business Week

National Small Business Week is celebrated every year in the US during the first week of May. This year’s week-long celebration will be centered on ‘Building a Better America Through Entrepreneurship. We, in District 9 believe that small business are the economic fabric that hold our communities together.

Currently, the City of San Diego has 2 great economic assistance programs for San Diego Businesses Affected by COVID-19:

• CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act Revolving Loan Fund - Eligible expenses include, but not limited to outdoor/Curbside business operations equipment, such as umbrellas, canopies, heater, tables, chairs and signage. Online operations expansion, such a website development, online sales and delivery platforms, or digital marketing. Loan terms are: 3% annual interest rate, $100+1% loan original fee, no payments or interest accrued for the first 6 months, 54- to 78-months loan term. 
• Temporary Outdoor Business Operation Grant - Assists small businesses with adapting operations amid COVID-19, the City of San Diego is offering grants up to $3,000 to businesses constructing outdoor decks and platforms compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). As much as an additional $2,000--for a maximum grant of $5,000--will be available for businesses located in low- and moderate-income areas (LMA) or owned by a sole proprietor or majority group who meets federal low- and moderate-income (LMI) requirements. Grants may be awarded in advance of construction, with LMA businesses and low-income majority owners receiving expedited, priority processing.

Another opportunity is connecting with the San Diego Small Business community by joining the Promise Zone Economic Activity Working Group. They meet on the second Wednesday of the month from 2:30-4pm. Their next meeting is May 22. 2022. The Promise Zone calendar of events are HERE.
